  • How do you run your operations?

Just a few questions on how any one else runs there business. With 3 or more man teams doing either commercial or residential jobs do you have set people to do certain tasks or is there variety to who mows, blows, etc. Also how many of the "owners" or bosses go and mow with there team, or do they sit back at the home or office? Finnaly what do you do about large commercial jobs which require a pretty extensive amount of whacking around signs, tress, etc, I guess the person doing it can walk real fast?

I have two 3 man crews and two 2 man crews. The 3 man crews are for the larger residential and commercial properties and the 2 man crews are for the smaller residential.I rotate one man from each crew every week so that they wont have to do the same type of work all the time.It also helps them to stay familiar with all the different equipment.I also work with one crew every week. It seems to work fine this way but i'm sure there are many ways to do it.

As far as how we run things on a large scale, we try to make things as close to any other industry out there. As in days worked, benefits, health care, etc.

As far as crews, we run 2 man crews and do strictly small commercial properties. Depending on size, but usually, both men mow at the same time, then each man trims what he just mowed. If one gets done first, he comes and helps the other finish up. Then one guy gets the blower, the other guy gets the Round-Up sprayer and go do their thing. The first one back to the truck finishes loading up and strapping it down. Then off to the next location.

I do go out with one of the crews almost everyday. I rotate which one I am on occasionally to check up on all properties over a monthly span.

I enjoy going out with them, that is one reason I started doing this work in the first place.....not to sit in the office all day. Even though I should do that more often!
