  • customer wants my SSN or tax id

I mow mostly resedential and have only a few commercial clients. Today we got a call from a customer (I do her home and a tiny strip infront of a trailer park she owns). She stated that her accountant needs my social security number or my tax ID. I dont have a tax ID, I just use my social since I'm a sole propriter. She stated to my wife (she answers the work phone) that her accountant needs it for a 1099 for me.

Is she confused or am I? I am not a sub-contractor getting work from another lco, I'm a company providing a service to a customer. She doesnt give her water or cable company a 1099. Whats the deal?

I do mostly residential but I have 2 commercial and both gave me a W-9 form to fill out. I believe it is so they can write off the lawn care as an expense. But I don't think just giving them your social or tax number is good enough ask them to give you the form and fill it out for them. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Any small biz can send you a 1099. Actually, I think they are suppose to send one to every contractor that they pay over $600 to in a year. If you are incorporated, they don't need to though.

I never had a residential client do that though.

Is she wanting to send it because she considers that tiny strip in front of the trailer park hers as some type of business thing???

i have been in a some what similar situation b/4. #1, make them send you the form to fill out. #2, don't give them your social, get yourself a tax id #. you can do it over the phone with the irs. it cost nothing. takes about 15 min. make a copy of the form they send you after you fill it out. i don't know if you are legit or not, but now is the time if not, cause they don't need the form to report those wages. i think they are charged some type of penalty for the irs finding the imfo. then, you will be charged too for not reporting also. that is, if your not legit. otherwise, what i said above. i would think wages are wages whether you report them or somebody issues you a 1099.

You can down load the w9 from the irs web site. I don't know when you have to 1099 and not. I work for some very very large co's and small ones and there is no patern to who sends you one and who dosn't.

yes, she doesnt live in the trailer park she owns it and rents out the lots/trailers. I mow her home "in the nicer part of town" and the entrance to the park.

Then she is wanting to deduct just that trailer park portion for her taxes.

I assume it's over $600/yr? If not, no 1099 is needed.

If you haven't been billing the two properties seperately, start now. The 1099 should only be for the amount you charged her in that park.

I get a 1099 from a snow removal company I plow for as a sub contractor but have my file updated yearly with proof of insurance and a copy of Drivers Licsense or I dont get to plow, I only recieve it when I make over $600.00 per season, as for legit or Tax ID number I have only done a scedule C for tax purposes and the Business Lisc is merely a Tax in this area for free if you make under 10k a year and $25.00 for 10k - 50k and from there it goes up, but you dont get tax ID with it.

I would suspect that she should be having you sign a contract if shes going to the extra step of the 1099............

You can do it online and have a tax ID number in a matter of seconds. It's all free as well.

Fill out a w-9 and give it to her, this is common practice.

funny, i get home today and check e-mails and guess what's there, a request for a W-9. i downloaded it and will send it in using a tax id # instead of social. this is a house that i've been working at since feb. the guy put it up for sale and moved out and it has been sold for quite awhile and the real estate co. kept my services.

I dont know about in Fl. But here in AR you have to charge sales tax on comercial acounts, if you have not been doing so this could really turn into a mess. Good luck
