Well, as long as the client will pay for aerating.
yea....there is a hundred other things I'd rather do than de-thatch a lawn. Core aeration isn't exactly a long-term solution for a thatch problem.

How are you coming along in your answer search Sporty?

Thatch is caused by infrequent mowings, and letting the grass get too tall, the blades decompose rapidly, but the stalk of the plant does not, thus creating thatch. Dethatching should be done when there is more than 1/2 inch or the lawn feels spongy, preventing water and fertilizer from leaching into the soil.

Core aeration is the practice in which dirt is brought to the surface and deposited on the base of the plants and allowing water and fertilizer to get to the roots below the surface, it should be done when the ground is damp. 3" I believe is the proper depth.

One reason for thatch is over fertilizing and over watering.

Thatch is a mixture of living and dead grass. 1" or more is considered excessive in my area. Overfertilizing, over watering as well as improper mowing can cause thatch as well as the grass growing faster than the old growth can decay. I have never seen pesticide use create thatch but thatch can make it more difficult to apply pesticide. Proper mowing, fertilization and watering can help reduce thatch. Areating can create a better environment for microbial activity but light topdressing is a better biological method because it brings the soil microbes into the thatch layer. Also the soil ph can affect microbial activity which helps to break down thatch. Last but not least there is always mechanical removal but I havent had to go there.
