  • question for TRANNYQUAKE ???????

really for anybody, but i want the technical GURU to give his spin first. they got this thread going about sharpening blades. what would be YOUR criteria as to when to sharpen blades? how many times would you sharpen a set b/4 tossing them? what method would you use to sharpen? would you balance them and how would you balance them? do you recommend lightly oiling the blades b/4 sharpening? do you recommend marking your blades to go back in the same spot? impact or torque wrench?

Steve, I know you're waiting for Tranny to answer, but, here's my criteria. The blades on the Z's get changed out halfway through the routes every day. The WB's are changed out each day. The 21's are changed about once a week b/c they see little use. I use an impact and a combination of a bench and angle grinder.

I assume you don't run by the shop in the middle of every day to change blades...what do you use to change them in the field?

Overkill......................Changed out once per day or every other would most likely be fine.......
How many z's and how many routes per day we talking about????????

Instead of throwing out BS on here, I will truthfully say sometimes one of our machines may run a week on a sharpening. Yes it needs to be done more often but sometimes there is not enough hours in the day or that particular unit may be still out cutting when the rest of the units recieve fresh blades...And yes, when they run that long they are dull as cheot.

Change em every day, period. Sharpen em until the sail is wearing off on the back of the blade. Never balanced em, no issues. put em on with a ratchet or impact.

to add to the original question..

Does anybody rotate the blades, as in left to right, or whatever. And if so what good does it do. Not trying to hijak yhe thread steeve. This has been on my mind lately along with all the Questions you had at the top.

Your question needs to be qualified by the type of turf and Soil or terrain. Blue Grass and Bahia are very fibrous and will dull blades quicker than softer turfs like St Augustine. Sandy soil will also sand blast decks and blades if the turf is thin. Rough terrain will scalp etc. As torn (not cut) grass starts to heal it turns white and then a light brown. From the Street looking at torn (not Cut) grass it will have a white or light brown appearance after about an hour or two in the sun. Grass cut with sharp blades will not lose the green glow in the sun. Just like a clean Paper cut on your skin that heals quickly. Grass blades heal quicker when cut with a sharp blade. Grass torn off with Dull blades will continue to have split ends that distract from the general over all appearance of the lawn.

In one of these threads, Someone Knocked Master Moron for changing blades 3 times a day. Hum. Master Moron has a Degree in Horticulture. I am wondering if his college professors taught him about sharp blades the same as my College professors taught me??

The Art of Sharping is a skill. Knifes are generally sharpen 17 to 22 degrees. But Mower blades get duller quicker the sharper they are. 30 to 35 degrees is about right for mower blades. While the Blade starts out not as sharp, It holds that edge better than a lesser angle because there is more steel to wear down before going totally dull.

Oh well I have wasted my time typing once again. The Unwashed Masses will change blades when the lift wing wears off. They will also continue to wonder why their business never grows or goes under. If they would only drink the water.

I Think It Depends On What Your Cutting Ive Found That St Augustine Dose Not Dull Half As Fast As Bahaia Ect So I Try To Cut The Latter At End Of Day Just Check The Blades Best Way To Tell And I Use A Orgon Blade Grinder Setup Its Great, I Allso Use A Toro High Lift On My Hustler 60 They Disperce Better Than Stock Blades And Also Mulch Better Theres A Lotta Blades Out There One Thing Is Not To Let Blade Tips Get Thin Its Just Not Safe

Rachet wrench in the field...change out takes 5 mins per machine.

2 Z's and 2 different routes. If you never have had experience cutting super thick St. Augustine and mulching it, then you can't image how fast blades will get dull.

We aim for about 10 hours, i don't just change everthing at the same time cause if 2 mowers go out for a day they can have 2-3 hour differance at the end of a day or 2. They don't get done as much as i like, but about 2-3 time per week is average.
