i think i'm just going to charge by the square foot. that is how i do areation. right now i have 3-4 people who want there lawn rolled and 1 that wants areation as well. last season i rented an areator and used it on 7 lawns. i'll probably just charge the same per square foot charge for both.

It can serve to level out worm mounds, frost heave, deadfall impact spots, indentations from foot traffic, critters excavations, and low spots show up much better if you are going to be top dressing. The slight surface compaction that occurs will even increase worm activity which will in turn loosen up the soil, providing better aeration and drainage. It all works out in the end. Seen it over and over on jobs. Example: lots of trucks and equipment parked on turf during a job. Compaction? Oh yes. Much more so than you'd get with a lawn roller. Go back to pick up remaining equipment a couple days later after the weekend and all the traffic areas are riddled with worm holes and mounds. There was no worm activity visible away from the compacted areas. It rains a couple days that week and soon that area is in better shape than the rest of the turf. Pity the fool that's got no earthworms.
Do it at the right time, for the right reasons.
Very well said. ... TY
Late last fall, I ran the garden tractor and trailer across my back yard to the brush pile. The back yard was hit hard from moles and frost heaving. Where the GT was driven, you can see nice, green tracks. The rest of the area looks a little mix of green and brown.
Just Roll The Darn Lawn And Be Done With It !
Spotty, just figure your rolling charge by 1 or 1.5 times what you would charge to mow it. Areation should be 2 to 3 times what you would charge to mow.

does it really matter who's thread it is? the whole point is to learn something. i had a question and i got my answer. i don't care if other people took over the thread. i didn't put it up here to teach someone something i already know. i put it up so i could get an answer to my question.Originally posted by boazcat View PostI love how thread gets hijacked...
for those that are curious. so far i've only done 2 of the 5 people that originally wanted there lawns rolled. 3 haven't gotten back with me. i charged $45 for each rolling because i would normally mow the lawn for $30. 1 of the 2 already has hired me to aerate the lawn in the fall.

thanks but i personally don't plan on doing much more lawn rolling than i already have. it's also not a service i ever plan on offering. if clients ask for it here and there i'll either use what i got or rent one. once i get something to pull it that is.Originally posted by Sammy View PostTractor Supply has steel rollers on sale this week, $45.00 off of the 24"x48", $35.00 off the 18"x36" ones.
on the 2 lawns i did i used my grandpa's one he got 45 years ago for a buck. its of course not the greatest but surprisingly the clients said it worked

we've used this roller for years and years. i can't tell you how many holes we've patched every time it gets used. the roller is so thin it gets at least 3 holes every time it gets used. but thanks for looking out for me.Originally posted by hardboiled View PostA word of caution on using your gramps' roller.....I've run into older rollers where people used kerosene or diesel for ballast. Make sure you know what is in it in the event it rusts through and develops a leak.
