Well, that was funny! Zack, I bet that job would look great! Tell me, how does one trim and blow off at the same time???? And if it is the smaller properties, how long does it take to go back to the truck and grab the blower? I'll tell ya, less time than it would take for one guy to hobble around trimming with a backpac blower dangling off his back!

Wow, just when you think you have heard it all.

Have you guys got photos you'd like to share with us Aussies of your equipment. While there is so much similarity between our lawn mowing business and your own the machinery and the fact that you mulch a lot more then we do here in Aus would have to be the main difference! If you'd like to send us some photos our email address is info@indmowing.com.au and if you don't mind we might add these photos to our website, just out of interest for the aussie contractors.
The reason i mentioned the fact that you mulch is that due to the fact we don't so much here in Australia makes mowing last a very logical method. Everything is picked up and left neat by mowing last!
Well take care all and best wishes from down under!

Zack, You make your guys carry a bp and trimmer while trimming and vise versa? Wouldn't that be kind of awkwrard. I'm trying to get a visual on how screwed up that would be, wouldn't this add to the fatigue factor? I would tend to believe that the tube would constantly get in the way while trimming and hinder progress. And then blowing while hauling a trimmer? The time saved carrying only one piece of equipment would easily make up for the trip to the vehicle to change equipment. Maybe you need to retrain your monkeys or give em fresher peanuts.

I thought I would share some photos with you of some of my lawns here in Australia! As you can see there is no grass to be blown anywhere, we pick it up and leave a nice finish! The edges are done, the brushcutting or timming as you call it then the mowing.

Example one:

Example Two (note the edges, they were actually done 3 weeks prior with a motor edger):

Scaper:

I agree that holding a trimmer with a running blower on your back would be awkward...in my case, just about impossible. My blower (Echo PB-602) has left side throttle. Oh, well, I guess I am not as talented as Zack's trimmer monkey. After all, according to Zack, since I use a blower with a hip mounted throttle, I am a scrub...so what's new

Nice looking work. I wish St. Augustine would stripe !!!

Oh, BTW, ematthews, I edge, trim, mow then blow. I use gator blades most of the time, so the clippings are itty-bitty and not noticable when blown back on the lawn. It is true that you may have to go back and re-trim what the mower missed the first couple of times on a lawn, but from there on out, you get to know the property well enough that you know the area that the mower can't do and trim them initially. This is the approach that works best for me.

St. Augustine does stripe, for about 10 minutes then it springs back to where it wants to go. And with this incredible amount of rain we've been getting in the florida panhandle it just laughs at you when you're done cutting and grows an inch while you watch it. Been kinda tough on the blades the past few weeks.

Starting this evening, and for the next 3 days, we are due for the remants of the storm that you had (TS Bertha, I believe). This time of year, if we do not get a TD or TS or Hurricane, we get no precip (except very isolated). We had 3 days of good rain about 3 weeks ago and nothing since. Prior to that it had been 3+ weeks. Looking forward to this rain. I really feel for those folks in North Carolina...bad situation up there.

Thanks for your comments rkbrown, the cylinder mower you see in one of those pictures actually has self sharpening blades so they are sharp 24/7. Fantastic mower, unfortunatly even here in Australia they are only really used in one state. We are currently trying to introduce them into the other states (such as our own) as in my mind these are the best in Australia.

ahhh, and I see you have decided you had enough of Bertha and decided to toss her back out into the gulf for more people to enjoy.

Yeah them guys in the Carolina's, I guess that TD can't make up it's mind as what it's going to do.

I try to look at the bright side of things. When we get heavy winds, whether it's a TD, TS, or huricane. I always get my chainsaw blades sharpened and buy a few more cause the phone will ring off the hook.

Did you hear that Glen? hint-hint.

Unless your BP's are still scrubbed out with all tube connections or have an inneficient side mount throttle I would suggest insisting your blower guy carry a trimmer in his left hand to catch any missed spots on his run around the hard surfaces. This not only saves time for reloading but ensures better quality control.

I'm sure he was kidding. Never know. How can you trim and blow the trimmings off at the same time? It is funny though. I think more time could be saved if they were pushing the 21" mower at the same time! Mow, trim, blow.....all at once! Hey wait, what if we also mounted a spreader to the front of the 21"??!!
