  • Blue Light Special on Murrays....

No one has complained much....yet...about scrubs, so I thought I'd get a thread started.

In my area I have noticed a sheot load of trucks pulling trailers with brand spanking new riding Murrays and Weedeater brand(or similar) push mowers. You know, the crap you buy on blue light special at your neighborhood Wally World. I guess in these tough times Joe Blow has to find a way to make some extra money and what easier way than to go pay a couple of hundred dollars for some crappy equipment and go mow a few yards! I mean there are guys out there that mow yards for a living...right, so surely these hacks with their brand new mowers can make a killing this summer too! They ought to have to wear a sign on their backs that says,"I don't make sheot at my other job, so I bought this piece of sheot so I can make enough that I don't have to listen to my wife's sheot." Any way you look at it, that is a bunch of sheot!

Do you think they are scrubs because of their equipment or because they are new to this business? They may be legal and saving up for better equipment.

Need some cheese with that whine?

If those turds are cutting into your business then you may need to look at why your customers are not pleased with you. If you do crappy work but have a bran spankin new Z, it will do you no good. Murrays will churn the hay, I may have to switch from Yardman to those.

        No, not really.

How about you shut the hell up? :alien::alien::alien:

So you're telling me you'd have been one of those persons laughing at me when I used to tow two cheap 21" push mowers on a $50 trailer???

Everyone has to start somewhere. At least they ain't looking to the government for a handout. I might chuckle at these same guys, but at the same time I show them respect. Way to be a role model!

i am in some agreance with you MM. i think depending on what kind of money you started with what kind of clients you start with depends on the equipment you use.

i really don't think it is a good idea starting with homeowner equipment. at least not the mowers (minus toro and honda). they won't hold up and they scream "scrub" when you see people hauling them around.

i started with a honda 21 incher, an exmark metro 36" and my trimmer was a homeowner ryobi model and my blower was a stihl br400. everything but the exmark was what i used to cut my own grass before i got into the business.

hell i'm still using the stihl br400 that thing is awesome. the ryobi was a split shaft trimmer and i had the edger attachment. the string trimmer broke so now it's my stick edger and i have the hedge trimmer attachment. other than that ryobi everything else i own and use is commericial now.

Damn...did I hit a nerve or what!?!? Sure everyone has to start somewhere, but how you gonna like 5-10 new residential competitors in an already competitive market. Maybe you got a corner on it and don't need to worry about competition and that is great for you. But there are guys in this area that seem to be loosing yards left and right because "Mr. Murray" runs a little $20 special in the newspaper and doesn't have even half the overhead that some of the legit guys have. Oh, and Yard Rat...90% of my business is commercial. Mr. Murray can't compete in that world. And FYI - never had an account dropped due to poor quality.

Thing is...we all mowed a little grass(sounds like some smoked a little too!) in high school and we all probably used a Murray. But then we grew up and got serious and decided this is how we would start making a living. So when I see a $30,000 truck pulling up to mow yards with a $800 mower, it gets me a little fired up. It is easy for you to see the difference in service that you could provide with your years of experience and your high end equipment that was designed for "professional" use, but is it gonna get you the job? Or in the end is it gonna come down to who is willing to give Mrs. Smith the lowest price possible?

I think it's gonna come down to who does the best job. This is a service business and if you don't deliver you won't be very busy.

Sir, I can take my 42" Yardman and mow commercial properties, my 30" yardbug kicks azz in small areas too. I may just move from Kansas and bring some heavy competition to the oklahoma area.

Just washed the murry up.. Look at those rims sparkle.............
