  • MM provides a tree health lesson....

Tell me what is wrong here...what would you tell your customer if this was their tree??? Yeah, I know, you're the lawn dude and don't really need to know, since you just cut the grass.....but the better lawn dudes grow past that persona.

Little background info. This is ~40 year old Ash. Limb broke out in last Monday's hurricane here. That limb has been removed and is not pictured. This is what remains of the tree. Several years ago a limb fell on the roof, you can see the cut from that limb on the top of the last picture. No reason why that limb broke (broke half-way) other than stress on the limb. This tree is not diseased nor does it have any issues with insects.

Thats exactly what I was going to say until I read the whole post...it looks as if it broke off.....

This should be in the landscaping forum, not here.

Please move it to the proper forum. ... TY

Bad specimen with bad branch formation, bound to happen, double leader tree with one leader becoming two again, which later split and that caused the dead and now rotting wood at the top of the damaged area, then broke from that split down to the base, peeling the bark off the other leader-should have been cut down shortly after sprouting.

            Google:
            included bark
            codominant stems

After your search refer to the pictures once more...

            Discussion to follow...

Now that you've studied up a bit, do you have an idear as to how the poor tree structure happened?

yea, the tree's mother was a prostitute and the daddy was a crack addict. put them together and you get one fricked up tree.

So you're telling me it was fricked up to begin with? Hmm.

You think anything could have been done to prevent this?

Look's like a tipical bradford pear disease.
Post #4 gave the best response.
                          However,
What would it do to the tree if you cut the shorter limb away leaving one main trunk?

Cut it off at the collar and paint it with sealer so it doesn't get infected. From the pics it looks like the tree will lean away from the structure. Or trim it about an inch off the ground.
