You tell them pay time is 5:00 on Friday, they missed it so they can pick their last check up on Monday.

For me, no call and no show for 2 days straight means you just chose to terminate your employment.

By the way, there are a lot of people looking for jobs out there. Why waste your time with the lazy ones?

There are people out there that need every working minute they can get just to make ends meet. I wouldn't waste my time on dead beats! If you can pay out a descent wage and offer some work structure you should be able to attract a few descent employees. But be careful our you'll wind up like me... everyone shows up, but they just leave their brains at home.

I've love to work for you. When can I start? And more importantly, when do I get paid? Federal law states you must provide notice to the employee and maintain regular paydays. Did you know that? :alien::laughing:

Didn't think so...but now you do.

Kick 'em to the curb! Don't waste your time on dead beats. Too many people out there need every minute of pay they can get.

I have found that paying a competitive wage and providing a structured business environment helps attract dependable workers.

Getting employees to show up is easy... making them use their brain is the hard part.

Our pay period runs from Friday through Thursday. What type of pay period do some of you guys use?

Actually, your pay period can be whatever you want it to be just as long as its a regular deal. Our pay periods were the 15th and the end of the month. The 15th was a draw and the final pay at months end had all of the paper work done with deductions, but its a big drain on the cashflow.

So this past month, we experimented with a draw on the 10th, a draw on the 20th and final pay with paystub at the end of the month. Its easier on the cashflow and the crew likes it. Its a done deal to the new way of doing it.

We give the employees 80% of total dollars per payperiod with 20% withheld to cover taxes etc just incase someone quits before the end of the month. That way we aren't screwed with paying out too much.

Sorry for the near duplicate post guys. Just signed up and first post had a little lag time.

theone4949, I pay my employees on Friday but their hours stop the Thursday before. I have heard of businesses using a Mon - Sun pay period with paychecks on Monday. I suppose it could keep the Monday morning no shows down to a minimum if your still using payroll checks.

Stephen is it legal to withhold a percentage like that from someones pay check? Our payroll taxes are deducted to the penny based on the employees W-4 allowances and then transferred into a separate bank account. Maybe I'm missing something, but don't we only withhold taxes on a paycheck after it's been earned? How would you lose money? Please forgive me if I've missed something.

                              What?
                              20% to cover taxes
I do not understand...... So do you hold out the 6.2% and 1.45% for ss and med and match it on your 941? Do you have them fill out a w-4 so you know exactly what to hold out? Do you give them a w-2 at the end of the year or a 1099? Do you pay UE tax and carry WC? Ratty is confused? Maybe half drunk too? Dunno?

Here is a breakdown of how The Rat rolls...............
The RAT's pay period run Friday morning thru thursday night. The RAT downloads time Thursday night and prints checks to give out Friday. The Rat uses Jobclocks for time and Paycycle for payroll........The Rat makes his monthly deposits 'form 8109' and fills out quarterly 941's and quarterly UE reports and quarterly state withheld tax report.. The Rat issues w-2's at the end of the year. The Rat is also audited at the end of each year by his workers comp carrier so they can milk every last penny they can get off of the Rat.
