  • Not gonna sweat this one.....

Got outbid on a large city cemetery job this week. It was right at 50 acres. Probably about 75% of the property was dotted with grave markers so there would be a sheot load of trimming. One year contract, re-bids every year.

Anyway, about 8 legitimate lawn service companies bid the job and about 2 groups that are "wanting to start" lawn service companies bid the job as well. Bet you can't guess who won the bid!?!?!?!?

Yep...the wanting to start company won the bid at $28K

The other start-up company came in at $32K. The highest bid was $125K. I'm curious as to where you all would come in on a bid like this???

estimate on man hours worth of trimming? Re-bid every year? That sucks, one year you have it, the next you don't.

My family has cemetery of about 10 acres.. 5 of which is used and maintained. I wish I could find a better way of maintaining the grass around the head stones besides line trimming or roundup. Any suggestions? Keep in mind there's not a lot of money floating around since its a not for profit cemetery.

I'd have to see it to bid it. My guess would be 60. an acre and 28 mows or about 84,000. The condition of the terrain would dictate how long its gonna take. Some old cemeteries are rougher than the look and can be difficult to mow.

i know this doesn't help you out any but i've seen some cemeterys that have flat head stones that you can mow right over the top of. people have vases with flowers and stuff that can be removed but it's a hell of lot better than trimming around all those head stones.

i'm actually surprised to hear that cemeterys are even bidding out the mowing. around here all the cemeterys i can think of have a full time maintenance crew themselves

You must be down town buddy. Who do you think cuts the ones out in the country? It takes time to make a cemetery look good, most do not have the money and most are not funded properly or have a full time crew.

Must cut two times per month. Sheotee thing is...the contract runs June 15 - June 15!! with mowing months April thru September. It pays out over the year in even increments monthly.

At $46 per acre they are nutz for it's going to take 3 man hours to cut and trim just one acre.

They bid the job at just labor only w/o regard to overhead, equipment costs, or any profit.
