Keep your eyes on the drum bar at all times,,,, almost like things already are going bad...... than its just reaction to grab it and stop the drums. If you ever have to actually grab it ,, grab it like you are trying to break it off the machine.

Thats what i tell my guys everytime we fire up a chipper. No matter how many times theyve ran one.

How many tree services do you thing have that safty feature turned off?

There is a show called 1000 ways to die. I guess they have covered this happening and one of the experts were talking about the worst part would be that you would feel it till your head went in.

i would say none, i have been in the tree care industry for over 25 years and i never seen one turned off, in fact you can not turn one off.

that saftey bar is just as needed when feeding the chipper with brush when too much is put in and it binds up as well as when chipping larger material you need to stop the feed to let the engine catch up.

chances are the cables that hang inside were worn or missing and even if there your body will be half consumed by the time you stop it with that system.
most likely he was using his foot to push a small peice through or his clothing got caught these chippers move fairly slow and you really have to be putting yourself in harms way to be in that position, but at the same time even though they move slow if they grab you you got major problems because our skin and bones is no match for this machine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it would happen very fast once you got caught up in the machine.

I know when we run the smaller 6" Vermeer chipper, if you put in something smaller or softer, it doesn't slow down at all, it basically whips it right through.

Those massive chippers that the tree companies use seem to do the same thing but can handle stuff twice the diameter. My guess is that unless that machine had something large slowing down the feeder, if you're grabbed, you have 5 seconds before you are completely pulled into the knives of the machine. Obviously at that point it might bog down, but the whole body would already be inside.

What a horrible way to die and a horrible thing to see happen to a friend.

too many. i see a lot of lawn services disregarding a lot of the safety issues. trimmers with no guards. no hearing protection, eye protection, lawn mowers that came with ROPS and they removed them, etc.
