  • I want to buy a lawn service..help?

Hey guys, I curently have my own lawn service and have had for over 10 years. There is a lawn service that is wanting to get out of the business and wants to sell. he has 80 yards, no contracts, tons of equipments and trailer. Im going to look at what kinds of equipment he has tomorrow, but he is asking $30,000. What do yall think?

IF everyone stayed with the new owner (you) after he left, how much would the business bring in?

Ron Howard: Is that... vodka... and wheat grass?
Homer: It's called a "lawnmower". I invented it. Want one?

Yea, and I have title to a big bridge in Arizonia that you can pay me for. No contracts on 80 customers sounds like a pig in a polk. What you will buy is $30,000 worth iof equipment and within a year you would be lucky to keep all 80. Unless his name and good will is worth $30,000, I wouldn't waste the money.

you need to not look at it as buying a biz but as 2 separate transactions.

determine what you will pay for the equipment then handle the customers separate.

something like a small up front fee (5k) and the 5% of the rev off those customers for 3 years. just as an example, no thought was put into the number

not sure i agree, i would right now if the right deal was brought to me. Because of the economy, the last 3 years number should be a decline, which gives you the buying power to get a great deal. This would then give you a huge jump coming out of the osession.

Plus texas has a great economy compared to va.

AND, va. does suck right now. a friend of mine who has (HAD) a big operation of mow and blow ran 2 trucks last season with a three man crew on one and a two man crew on the other. this season he has a two man crew with one truck running. most i talk to are in the same boat and then you have the ONE that is busy as hell and is putting on people and adding more trucks.

With no contracts and only 80 customers I would let that one slide by. Your money would be spent on some equipment and IF things go right maybe 80 more jobs, and if they were making decent money on those jobs why is the price only $30K? IMO to many if's

                    This guy wants out mid-season?

Buy the equipment for what it's worth.....the customer list ought to be free if you buy it all...

If his existing customers are willing to sign a contract it could potentially be a good deal. Also, the condition of his equipment can cause the price to vary greatly.

it is always nice to start with a customer base, but i agree with the fact you evaluate what the equipment is worth and then you decide what the customer base is worth. you don't want to overpay for clients because many might leave when it gets taken over and you could spend that money on marketing instead and build your own business
