  • Edging Beds for Mulch

    Hello,
I am edging a bed along a driveway. The yard makes a slope down onto the driveway. When cutting an edge how deep should the edge be cut? due to very rocky conditions I can only get about an 1- 1/4 inches deep on the edge. Is this ok? I guess it would have to be because I can't get more. Also, the bed is only about 12 inches wide and is on a steep slope, would the mulch stay in place here? I am concerned that because I couldn't dig deeper that the mulch will be too shallow and wash down onto the driveway the first time it rains. Any help or advice would be great. Thank you. Ray W.

My edges are usually about 3-4" in depth... Anything less and it tends to look bad.. There is only about an inch of edge still visible once the mulch/stone is added.

I couldn't tell you if it would stay in place, without seeing a picture of it. If you dug a deep edge, you probably wouldn't have a problem.. But since you can't, it's a close call..

    Good Luck!

Is this type if edging just a shallow trench rather than the plastic edging? Most folks here use the plastic. Works fine as long as you use stakes.

Speaking of plastic edging any tips on installing it 100% straight with no bends at all?

Dig your trench, careful putting it in with the stakes. Don't pound too deep. Keep them even. Then fill in the dirt.

Don't even think about not using the stakes.

Use the highest quality edging you can buy.

If possible, run a string line to use as a guide.
