Klean,
Look for a bottle brush little john(shrub). Very tropical kinda expensive but very unique and fairly low maintenance. I put a few in a tropical setting I did a few weeks ago, along w/banana trees, couple cega palms, a fan palm, hibiscus, some large rock.

Here are a few more that I used and looked good. staghorn fern, bamboo, jasmine, mandevilla, anthuriums, asparagus fern, bromeliads and bird of paradise. There are numerous others I just can not think of right now. These are a few that I used and they looked good. Remember with a tropical setting you want a natural look not the groomed hedge look. You want colors and textures. Did you try to sell him on a water feature of some kind? It does not have to be big because people like the idea of hearing water when sitting in their gardens. You may also try to sell him on a sprinkler system since you are going to have the ground dug up anyway. That will add some dollars to your bottom line.
