  • What to do in the winter?

    Hello,
I wanted to see what everybody did through the winter the first year or two before the big money came rolling in?
I am a newbie and this is my first year and while I am doing quite well so far I am not sure I will make enough this year to get me through the winter.
What did everyone here do for the winter? Thanks allot, Ray W.

        Why work??

If you can budget accordingly, you can enjoy the winter off. My crew leaders are paid 12 months out of the year with the money they actually earn in 8 1/2 months. Of course, not all employees will be able to be on that high of a pay scale. However, if you own and operate the company you should be able to do it. I tell my guys there are no such things as weekends during the season. We move them all to the winter and they are all in a row!!! 2080 hours is a typical work year. Work like hell during the busy season to rest up in the off.
Works for us and has for many years!!!!

Cattle farm, remodel houses, build decks, barns, cabins. I do low impact logging, I have a woodmizer sawmill and do quite a bit of costom sawing. It helps out quite a bit. This week we squeezed in a sunshade deck and a couple of arbors made from cedar we cut in the fall. I love working with wood more than I like slinging grass.

I have seen alot of people taking off in the winter on this forum. Can you really make that much money that you can take off all winter? I live in Philadelphia and our season runs from about mid April to the end of October. That's about 7 and 1/2 months. Can you make enough to live on all year? And are you lco's one man shows or larger lco's? I am pretty much a one man gig except if I get behind because of the rain (which has been all of this year). I also do this part time. I don't want to quit my full time job yet because I'm not sure if I can live off of lawn maintenence all year. If any one can answer any or all of these questions it would be a great help. I'm sure Scaper or Quality or even Jack D. might have some answers.

                  Thanks,
                  Mike

                    more ideas

Here's another thought if you live down south and where it doesn't snow and if you have the know how you could get into car detailing which I also do at best I'm very picky about how the paint shines in the sun and how its suppose to look. It's just a thought you could tell your customers about this winter plan to them that you could offer this service. It's another good business to get into and plus it's in the shade, you never want to wash your customers cars in the hot sun always try to find some kind of shade if you can't go buy one of those tent like things at academy or oshmans any kind of sporst store probably will carry them. This is what I'm planning on doing in the winter plus some lawn care stuff.

Any BUSINESS would have work all year round, whether it be work you are getting paid for or not. You can always call on commercial accounts and try to get bids in for the next year. You should always be planning and trying to expand your business.

                      -Snow Removal
                      -Pruning
                      -Retaining Walls
                      -Holiday Lighting
                      -Indoor Plantings
                      “veni, vidi, vici.”
