  • bidding acre

I need help! I got a call from a church to bid 2.5 acres. Needed mowing and edging. Haven't seen it yet. They said it's all field but they are mowing it now. They don't want to do it anymore. What would any of you charge? I only have a 21" right now because I'm just starting out. I will get a used rider if I get this bid. Thank You.

Also, can anyone give me an idea on how to bid this? Never did anything like this before. How do I write up a bid? Any help would be deeply appreciated.

are you doing any trimming or just flat out mowing? You need to go look at it and get back with us. Is it flat, have ditches, swamp, gators, etc...

for a bid proposal check out what Grassmaster has set up for us.

You can personalize it anyway you like too.

Okay, I looked at it. About 2 acres of field. Ugly! Already has been mowed down. Not flat exactly. Little bumpy like a field. Other than that it is flat. No matter what I will charge them a one time fee to tidy the place up. weeds in all beds, Grass growing on fenceline, etc. But, What should be my minimum to charge? Thay want it done every two weeks. I was thinking on $480 to clean the place up with 12 hours of work by myself and $320 to mow, edge, pick weeds here and there, blow, and keep everything up to par. That should take me 8 hour day by myself. Remember I'm new w/no employees. Not a big company. I averaged everything to be $40 an hour. Thank you for all your help.

Not to discourage you, but honestly I would turn the job down. With a push mower, you can't make 2.5 acres profitable. You can't be competitive on the job because you lack the equipment to do so. My advice is to try to find smaller accounts that you can handle with your push mower. Once you get some $$$ invest in a commercial mower so you can bid on accounts like this.

My luck, today I got a call from a lady that found out her husband has a new girlfriend. He owns a automation company and works overseas alot. She is moving to Florida, and trying to sell her house. I got a lot of work ahead of me with 1.5 acres at her place. Re-do beds, mow, edge, paint deck, all sorts of things. She has a Craftsman riding mower that looks brand new. Offered it to me. She told me to make an offer. I added it into the bid. I got the job. And the mower. And a 1966 ford truck for free from her with title, and a 8,000 lbs. capacity Clark forklift. I think she is upset with her husband. But anyways, I do have a way to mow 2 acres. I think things are working out alright for me. Not to get to religious on everyone but the prayers are being answered. So back to my point, What should I charge this for? Should I still leave it since I'm inexperienced and go for more residentail? Thank You

Well now you should be able to bid on the account. I usually charge $60 an acre, but churches tend to be cheap so I would try $45 an acre if you want to get it. If there is a lot of trimming, see if you can sell them on a round-up application to lower the price. Or say trimming is done once a month. Total bid for every other week mow and trimming once a month I say $150.00 since it is every other week.

Formal edging is by the linear foot $0.10. Minimum $30.00 charge.

You would be lucky to get that church for $80 a mow, kind of blows that $320 away don't it?

You don't have the equipment to be messing with lots this size and 1 more account asking you for a temp. bid, it would not be a smart idea to go out and buy a machine just for these 2 jobs.

Either go out and buy a good sized deck width mower or pass on both of them.
