Hello all. I am in the planning stages of putting together a lawn service for next spring. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice as far as equipment (makes and models) I would need to get started and when the best deals are (sales etc.). I am looking to start off with a small base of customers, so I don't want to go overboard on equipment right away. It would all be residential lots ranging from 1/2 to 1 acre. Also in addition I am considering leaf removal in the fall as well so any equipment recommendations for that would be well appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To me when you say small lots meaning 1/2 and 1 acre lots that's about 2 - 3 times the size of what I'm doing for each customer.
I started out doing small residential lots and still am. Here's what I began with. A consumer model Toro 21" Personal Pace for $550 with bag (bought new) - a good mower. I used it for five months and took it back to the dealer to inquire its worth, they said $400. I sold the old mower and purchased a Toro Proline 21" (commercial grade of course) for $1100 with bag. - best small mower you can buy.
I bought a Commercial grade 25cc Husqvarna trimmer for $260 and plan to use it for a few years - a really good trimmer does a fair edging job too. Lastly I recieved a 27cc Husqvarna Leaf Blower for $180 as a high school graduation gift. It suits my needs for now.
The mower and the trimmer I purchased with just six months of earnings with an average of 8 customers.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply Stephan. Off to shop around, I'll be sure to add those mowers to the list of possible purchases. Since i am new at this whole thing is there a better time to buy a mower as far as pricing goes (cheaper/better deals in the winter/offseason)? Thanks again for all of your input.
