I am just starting out and so far only have 2 lawns to cut and they are only every other week. I passed out flyers 3 days ago and have had only one phone call and that was someone wanting me to spray for spiders LOL. At this point I am considering doing it. I guess my question is how do I go about getting work in residential areas and find out when to bid on commercial. Please help! I'm getting hungry

keep passing out fliers, and business cards. Consider advertising in the local newspaper. This is late in the year to pick up and subsantial amount of new customers, but youd be suprised at how long people hang on to those fliers and cards for next year. Sell additional services (fertilizer, mulch, weed control) to make more money. Never stop selling.
Be careful about spraying for insects, especially in someones home, unless you are licensed and insured for that.

As a new homeowner, I looked at the local paper for ads for all sorts of services. Keep in mind that in many areas, new residents don't get copies of yellow pages for months after establishing service.
And the other thing I would advise is advertising in church bulletins if you can afford it and be sure to return phone calls. Nothing worse than waiting for your landscaper to return your call.
Good luck.
