  • Is biz getting tired of me?

I just can't seem to get this thing going the way I want it to.

I don't know right now if I'm just getting tired of the biz or the biz is getting tired of me. I keep leaving posts for help for certain aspects and I keep trying to change things to try to help improve my operation but at the end of the day I take no joy in what I've done that day.

This is my day broken down, can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong.

    With 32 clients I do 2 weekly, 6 bi weekly, 24 every 10 days.
I collect monthly, and I fiqured on paper to bring in only $13000 from May to November. 3 Commercial sites averaging $34.57/hour, 29 Residentials averaging $25.62/hour, all done by myself but I use an employee after rain storms to catch up.
I only mow/trim/blow in the mid summer, haven't had good luck with landscaping properties.

(All numbers are estimated, don't have my exact numbers in front of me, but their close)

Day started at 8 to 9 am.
Do only 3 or 4 properties a day, some days 5.
Usually finished by about 4 or 5pm with lunch and coffee breaks and driving included.

During day, I see most of my properties with small spots with bugs who have white strips on their backs. But their is a pesticide ban so I'm just watching it spread. Also weeds are in all but 2 of my properties (not severe, just present). These two things bug me all day and I feel theres nothing I can do about it.

Also during my day I see many other LCO's using bigger gear, more trucks and bigger properties. But when I try to bid higher on some sites, the owners actually show me prof that some other LCO's (whether scrubs or not) are bidding low.
Example: one of my commercial sites I bid $72 for the site, a LCO who have commercial gear bid only $39, the owner basically laughed at me, showed prof and everything. I then bid the site for $41 because I gave him business earlier that year and he wanted to give me the job but not $72. (note: 1 hour to complete)

This has happened at residentials too, so I feel I can't raise my price bar very far at all.

I'm getting very tired at the end of the day, not of the work, but of the stress that I feel because I can't climb the Lawncare Mountain with my Envy of other companies and pest just eating my business up. How do these guys do it, they must feel the same as me, but they appear to be growing and getting new gear.
    Thanks

Where are you located? You have to quit worrying about what other people are doing and just keep beating the bushes. I have been in this business for about 12 years and there days when I wish someone else had all this equipment that you keep talking about all the other LCO have. Trust me they have a lot of payments too. Even with all the equipment it's not going to be a day in the park. You stated you work from 8 or 9 until 4; that is not a lot of hours. I work 50 to 60 hours a week with 6 employees. If you work for someone else you are going to work at least 8 hrs. a day. You need to seek more jobs after 4pm if you are not making enough money. You are the one to fix the problem. What kind of pesticide ban do you have?
Good luck and hang in there.

Well, Well, Well.....Sounds like the bugs getting you....Heres what you do....Get up a little earlier like 6:00am. Go out side and get all your equipment ready for the day. Mowers/ edgers/ ect.ect. This should take about 15-30 minutes., then.....get in your truck and start off to your first account lets say its 15-30 minutes away this puts you at around 7:00am. If you like coffee and donutes go to your local donut and coffee house or like we do go to a gas station and feed yourself. O.k. now this takes like 15-minutes or so and off to your first account at 7:15 to 7:30am. Some counties laws wont let you start until 8:00am so adjust accordingly. Then start your day.Lets say you only have large properties that take an hour each. This will give you 8 properties per day for 8 hours. Times this by 4 days and your route is taken care of and you get friday off. Now reality!!!!! Same as above but work your butt off........I mean really dedicate your self...not for weeks but for years.....Now lets say you bust your balls and you get 16 done for the day,.,,smaller yards..,,NOW you can work 2 days and have 5 days for growth. Is this impossible...No not at all...I worked my self to the bone for 5 years before I even new I was supposed to take a lunch..I mean a real lunch.,"A sit down for 30 minutes, lunch."..My lunch was going through a fast food place and eating it on the way to my next account. Seriously, no joking, I only started the lunch thing recently as my employees needed a lunch by law. Any way back to the story, So for 5 years of 12 hr days and I was pushing 20-27lawns a day by myself. No joke. I guess the moral of the story is hard work for what you want. I did all the crap jobs., scrubbing toliets, pizza driver, office work., ect.,ect. But when that guy., that was like 10 years older than me., who was making only $1.00 more per hour., shouted at me and made me do stuff like cleaning the toilets ...man I tell you what I will bust my butt to make something of myself and not be in that situation again.......................K the big guys., Yes I do remember the big trucks pulling the nice equipment....It took me 3 years to buy my first 36" mower..but the big guys were pulling 24' trailers with like 6-8 of them....."MOWER ENVY"., the difference between them and me...I own mine cash and I appreciate it more..... Point being it up to you if you think its worth it. Do you have kids?...Do you want to be your own boss?...Do you want to take the risks?....I think its worth it...It sounds like your doing o.k. 32 lawns thats not bad....I ran an ad one time and everybody seemed to have their own route that I interviewed. I asked them, just to be nosey, and to see how I was really doing, just how many accounts did they once have. Every one of them said around 30-35. There was not one person who had more. Maybe thats the magic ,"TESTER" number. Well I will stop rambeling. My suggestion get up earlier, try to do more accounts, free up your time by doing more accounts, and throw out fliers, this should help bump up your accounts. As for those pesky bugs. I think they sell some kind of a natural bug-B-Gone thing. I am sure you should be able to find it on the internet. OR Just try some average dish soap and water., thats what they do here in california and it works. Also if there are bugs make sure the lawn is getting enough water.............And as far as the mower envy goes., it took me 7 years to get my first 16 foot dual axel trailer., and on it I put (1) bunton 48" walkbehind, (1) 36" snapper Pro walkbehind and 4 commercial toro's...almost fills it up but theres still more room............Have a great day and I hope you make the right decision......Temlawn

          Yard,
Can't tell for certain, so allow a fudge factor, main problem I read in your post were your prices. Seems like from 10 to 40% too low. It's sometimes difficult to realize and demand prices equal to your value at first.
Remember, you are running a bisiness, to make a profit, to pay your bills and then some.
Heat and fatigue may also be getting to you. Schedule yourself some R&R time too.
Better pricing, more money making accounts, you'll get there.

I am greatly amazed just how much you guys really care about all of us members here. I really appreciate each one of you taking time to write me a response.

            temlawn - Thanks, really... thanks.

Does that soap and water idea hurt the lawn or soil? And is my mower to blame for the spreading, can I prevent the spread... maybe hose my mower underneath with a garden hose after each cut, I doubt any of my clients would mind.

Finally, I just want a Z Rider more than you can imagine. I see swisher sells a small 36" model, I wonder if that would be good for my mower envy right now and my small size and not break the bank?

Sounds like you will do just fine. Sounds like you want it really bad. Youve expressed great desire to make this happen. So you will.
All the stuff you posted makes it real clear that you will make it . I suspect youll be in a good spot sooner than you think. Just finish this year and re group next year. Its gonna be better for you.
Your hearts in it so you wont fail.
Stick to your guns and the next time someone shows you a quote 1/2 of yours just shake theyre hand and wish them luck.
I remember the same aggrivation when i started. Just differant aggrivation now . But those dog days are generally gone.
In 3 years youll have 1 ztrn 2 48s and 2 employees and a ego the size of california.

This isnt as easy as it looks. You are trying to do it the right way and thats why it seems so hard. Its all worth it when it finally comes together.

Your first goal of the day should be driving loaded by 7:30 am no matter what. Even if you have no work that day. Go any how. Just getting out and making a presence drums up work.
Dont leave this forum and post anytime you need. Ill be watching for your threads to steer you along.

This thread reminds me of the day i was sitting in my apt in a chair by the window. I saw like 5 trailers fully loaded go by in like 3 hrs. My phone was ringing off the hook because my former boss who had tons of great work was helping me by giving me work when i needed. I had commited that day but when i woke up i just didnt have the mental energy. Thought i was makin a fool of myself for long enough. Cell was turned off and none of the checks i was waiting on came in the mail that day. Than the mowing crew pulled in w/ about 10 exmarks and 3 trucks. Icing on the cake. Hour later guy w/ a cell phone hanging on his belt came shuffling up and asked if i was the one that owned the truck and tralier out front in the lot. Asked me if i had any tire plugs. Just so happens i had the plugs the air compressor and all the works in my little 2 bay garage that i rigged up by crawling over the rafters and setting the door openers to the same code. He commented on my 3 junk w/b 48s sitting in there and i could only say " id enjoy them more if i had something to cut w/ them. He expressed a little interest in why i was struggling and asked if i owed him anything for the plug. I said no just bring back my plug tool. Hour later he came back and gave me the tool and asked if id take a look at something. Put me in a brand new 3500 HD chevy w/ air and drove me to the back where there was about 150 white pines lined up on the perimeter and asked what id want to cut it. told him i didnt know cause i didnt. Than he took me up to the front and said he cant get anyone that is willing to use a 48 on the front entrance. said his guys cry if he makes use a w/b on it but he likes it striped out w/ a 36. Told him i didnt have a 36. He asked what id want to do both those areas w/ a little trim work on the entrance? I didnt have a clue so he suggested that id want about $250 per cut for both areas. I about came out of the seat. I had yet to se a $50 cut. He said i could have it as long as i did it on tuesday mornings before or while they were there. I told him drop me off at my garages!!! That might be the day things got better for me. Since than he still gives me retainer walls and tree installs and various other stuff. He dont do anything like that he just cuts and apps. i tried to get the mulch on some of his stuff but another buddy of his has all of them. Today he is probally one of my better friends that i hardly ever see unless its biz related. This post just made me remember that day. I cut that for 2 years before i gave it up. I own a house now and i dont have any other cuts near it anymore. Just goes to show if you want something bad enough youll get it. I wasnt making a habit of sitting around feeling sorry for myself. I had been riding the grind for months. Days in days out. Just that day i was out of mental juice. I got blessed that day because i was not feeling good about this lawn service thing.

                  Yard,

How big are the accounts you are cutting and how long do you spend on them? How many hours do you mow per week?

I might have missed it, but what kind of equipment do you currently have?

Damn, Mike..... You guys are making me feel like I am in good company with these stories. I have my days too.... Serious growing pains, like I need to grow NOW! I'm sure you all have been there. Lucky for me I am right on the edge of the primary snow belt, and plan to plow this winter. That and buy 2 brand new snow blowers. I'm hoping that will give me a better start money wise in the spring. This year has been a bit of a struggle so far, but I'm keeping with it. Yard, hang in there. I keep telling myself that if it were easy, EVERYONE would be doing it. Also, always remember..... WORK is called WORK, because it IS WORK! Otherwise, they would have called it FUN!
