Getting my son started!

He wants to try to make a go of it this spring. He's been cutting summers but only small-time and I'm all for his expansion. I would like to get him a mid-size (34-44) WB and have been looking at Gravely, Toro and Exmark. We had a 1940's and a '60s model Gravely on the farm when I was growing up and they were some tough son of a guns. I would lean toward that brand in a belt-drive Pro-G or similar but I haven't followed the company and am not sure how they are doing these days. There have been a lot of good things here about Toro and Exmark and I've seen a lot of comparison of the two, but how do you experienced folks compare the Gravely in that group. It looks like we might get better service locally from the Gravely/Toro dealer. The Exmark/JD dealer is a little high-fallutin for my tastes!

I have personally never used gravely but if you are assured that you will get good service I would go for it. All commercial midsize mowers are very similar.

He's 15. Healthy and very responsible ie. I don't have a worry about his being able to handle this type of equipment.

havent seen much of gravely, i do know exmark is an exellent choice, i will be getting a Exmark 48" LHP in a couple of months! For his first mower i would go with the gravely, because all commercial mowers are tough and they all use the same engines practically, the only difference is in the other stuff, and like you said the dealer is local and willing to give exellent support! as for size, get the mower u think is perfect for the size of the lawns he is going to be doing! You'll want to get him a sulky for that thing also. hope he does well and earns some good money!

15? That's great however if he chops off his hand while working guess what?

I'm sure the 30, 40, year olds in your market will welcome him as an equal and with open arms ... ? ... come to think of it last time I flew United ... the copilot looked about 15? ... LOL ... no drivers license but a license to fly? ... LOL ... and mow and go ...
