question - Hopping curbs?

I have a chance to bid on a property that has 15 islands in the parking lot. Each Island is approximately 15'x27' and is all grass except for a small tree in the middle. There is a standard high curb around each island.

Do I need a small 22" push mower to do theses islands or do I use my 36" exmark metro ECS to do them. I am concerned because I am new and I don't know if you can walk an exmark over a curb like that.

I made a small ramp out of aluminum that is a pita but it does work well and it lets me use a bigger mower that saves me time and protects the customer's curb. I have had a customer thank me for using it.

You shouldnt have any trouble popping a curb. Its done all the time. Set your deck up (blades off of course) than pull up and push forward. Your wheels grab and your up. scraping curbs has never been a problem.

I think Walker makes a special ramp for curbs. Might want to check their web site.

Walker does make a ramp that mounts right on the deck when not in use. It appears to be made of black plastic (I've seen them at the dealer) but I don't own one.

Please Back Up over curbs. Do not go forward as Mr. Seascape suggests. You will likely not need to raise the deck. This would be easier if you had a hydro.

Ive never had a problem hopping curbs....****, sometimes I bunny-hop them

Jack.. your a stupid *** little *****. How and the hell is this guy going to back a 36 w/b over curb? Unless it was a hydro it would be the stupidist way to do it. You would have to pick the full weight of the mower off the ground and pull it back into the turf. vs. pop the front wheels up and gently lift the rears while sliding forward. Ztrns usually go more easily in reverse .

Id suggest you learn your place on this board,, it isnt back stepping my posts for sure.

And oh ya,,, lets all stop and raise our decks before we jump curbs. Cause we all know we do. Ya right!

I'll give it a try without the ramps first. But I will look into the walker ramp attachments. 15 curbs is alot nad if I have to do them repeatedly it makes sense to possibly invest in a ramp

I do not have a hydro. I got into this with minimum investment. The dealer said there was no point to buy a 36" hydro, but instead a 48" hydro would be a better investment. I was concerned about a 48" fitting through some residential gates so I went with the 36" belt driven. In hindsight a 48" hydro would have been better for commercial. So now I know.

Also I have a very strong back, and I don't think I'd want to be pulling this mower up backwards 15 times a day.

Call me an old timer but i think the ramps are just something they thought of to try to sell you. Ive never been looking at a curb wishing i had a ramp and ive been doing this a long time. I assure you by the time you get 2 hands on the ramp ill have my w/b in the turf w/ the baldes on.

You are correct ,,, you will have no interset in popping curbs backwards. This is simply pure stupidity and retardation on jacks part. Even if you have a hydro theres no need to back onto a curb.

Curbing backwards w/a hydro is the best way to deal w/curbs, & such a mower may be a wise investment if you are forced to deal w/ a number of islands. The mower will go easily over much larger curbs in reverse.

Mr. lilyrose, I would suggest you demo a hydro by backing the unit over a large curb & decide if the immense benefits are worth the purchase price.

Ya mr. liliyrose go get ya a hydro and 1) put in reverse 2) back it up to the curb 3)clutch it up into the turf area 4)spin it around and a straighten it up 5)put it back in fwd gear 6)kick the blades back on 7) begin mowing again.

OR

1) approach curb 2) place front tires up,lift and push forward until backs grab 3) kick blades on and begin mowing.

There are no "gears" on a hydro Mr. seascape & you don't "put it in reverse".
