ya your correct,, i ate **** on that one. Still pretty stupid to think that backing a w/b is easier than forward to get on a curb.

The answer is simple physics. Not only does the operator not have to contend w/ keeping the deck raised as he curb hops but the fact that the deck is level with the mower wheels as they climb & not raised up & pushing against the forward motion means that taller curbs can be easily & effortlessly conquered in reverse.

I think Jack learned these tricks when his walk behind was jetting down those steps.

the tires probally dont hook up 7/8 of the time,, than what ya goin to do? set up your ramp?

When do you pop the front of the mower up? before or after the deck starts scaping on curb?

              Gentlemen,

I appreciate the help I am getting from both of you SeaScape and Jack, because honestly my questions are totally basic. BUt I don't know so I ask. And you all answered. So Thank You to all.

Here is how I will settle this debate. I will go the parking lot tommorrow and test both ways out. I played around a little with the popping a wheely and so far I think its going to be very easy to do it that way.

The pulling it up backwards seems iffy to me. I mean what if I stepped in dog poop or mud and I slipped falling down and my leg goes under the mower. It seems dangerous. I mean 15 islands and that is just one building, they have another one down the road with possibly more islands. It could happen.

Also I think the backing up may be unnecessarily hard on my back. I will do both and whichever is the easiest, safest, and productive way is the winner. That settles it.

Mr. lilyrose, please demo a hydro mower backing over a tall curb & post your results for the unwashed.

                  Thank you.

                    Ramps

Dude you've just been had by the cabin fever monster. I also came here to learn late'ly it seems like the tempers flare Very quikly.I've run walkers a long time and some old dirtpitcher w/b you can bounce a curb backwards or forward, use a ramp or not, it all boils down to this. You ready. You paid for it! Treat it right and it'll treat ya right, by the way ramps by walker= 80. to 90. bucks. 2x4 boards cut to 4" over your wide'st wheel set, 3 bucks make a few of them toss'em between islands and go to work. Hope this helps.

we do many commericial building and multi family, when running belt drive forward over the curbs.

hydro's reverse is the only way. I am surprized to hear your story about forward. I suggest all go and try reverse with the hydro tomorrow.

15 islands??? not a problem use the 48 and get a chute cover that has the handle so you can open or close with the flick of the wrist.

Don't think I am siding with Jack on this, it is just FACT

It may be easier to back up with the hydro, and go forward up them if it is belt drive.

But didn't the person starting the thread say they have a belt drive unit?

If so, then going straight is the 'winning' method?

We run Toro belt drives, we go straight up.

I agree with Jack (sorry Seascape...)

I have a 52" hydro and wouldn't think about going forward over the curb. It bangs the deck too hard.

Backing up with the hydro doesn't scrape the deck. It works as lond as the curb has a slight slope to it. It's very easy. 8"+ curbs are a breeze.

I have a house that I have to jump a single step on the sidewalk. Totally vertical. Forward bangs the deck, cant backup over the 6". I bring a 2x6 and lay it flat and get up.

BTW, Lots of islands, be sure to bid a bit high for all of the extra time. Not only moving the mower, but extra blowing too.

Ya. i guess whats happened here is this. Back in the day was no such thing as hydro w/b. You must remember since about 97 i average about 10 hrs a year mowing. And thats on a 61" ztrn. My mowing crew is self sufficient and i have about 10 minutes around the shop lot on our 48 hydro. So no ive never been challenged to pop a curb on one. So perhaps im wrong on this one. One things for certain ill find out come april,, ill check for myself.

Skaper, Ya i also thought this guy was asking about his belt drive,, thats how all this started. It was jacks attempt to stomp me by shooving a hydro down this guys throat and referring to me personally that sparked this scrap. And ill do it next time he refers to me to.

Theres alot of guys seeking serious advice on here. Jack for some reasom is permitted to poke his mouth around scrubbing the board on a constant basis. Its grassmasters board and evidently he dont mind. Doesnt mean i have to like him or respect him.

He can count on the same reaction everytime he refers to me in anyway. Especially "Mr. Seascape".

Oh,, by the way,, you guys dont have to apoligize to me when you disagree with me. I dont have to be right all the time. Im not about that. I just dont like jack.

Seascape, I've never had a problem hopping curbs while going forward, but it I am using a hydro.

I havent either,, that was my point. But evidently hydros go in reverse. I think the original thread was pertaining to belt drives,, youd have to ask jack.
