Hauling away

I've got a question about hauling yard waste away from a customers property... If you don't have a dump truck (I don't) what do you guys use? Or, what do you find the easiest/most effective way to haul it? Also, I know, I know, I know be professional, but if a customer lives in an area that picks up yard waste free how unprofessional would it be to tell them you can save them some $$$ if you bag it and leave it for the town to remove? As always, any thoughts are always appreciated.

We use our 16' trailer to haul to the dump if needed charging a $25.00 hauling fee per trip. We have also informed the client that they will save some cash by using city pickup, and so, piled cuttings at the curb, this saves us money and time on our schedule.
A nice thing to do for your regular clients is to keep tabs on what day the city pick up will occur and try to work your clean up so as not to leave the cuttings laying to long. If you bag cuttings be sure and charge for your extra time.

If you use a vac system that uses the 45-gallon trashcans just buy 3 or 4 more cans. This makes it a lot quicker to dump than having to shovel it out of a truck or off your trailer. I very seldom have to haul anything off-site so I’m no help with the amount to charge for it.

Thats illegal here. Commercial debris cant go to the curb. You may want to check your local guidelines.

Thanks for the heads up. Here the city provides pick up service to folks that pile, or have piled their limbs, leaves and other lawn scraps at the curb. The city and county have landfills that accept cuttings. Commercial folks can and do haul loads of cuttings to both places and the city recycles these into undied mulch that their crews use on city property landscaping. The biggest concern is to cover the trailer so as no amount of cuttings leave the trailer bed. Our county provides none of these services but accepts clippings at the landfill.

If you remember the hard shifting Chevy we talked about, The problem with mine was dirt and small gravel in the fluid! I guess someone that I used to work with didn't care for supervisors. Anyway it's working a heck of a lot better.

Mike, are you saying putting each individual customers clippins by their own curb is illegal because a business mowed it vs. themselves? Or do you mean you can't bring home clippings from multiple lawns and set them out at your curb? I would think the former is ok but the latter illegal.

Our municipalities offer this to residents also. What i meant was that us as commercial contractors are not permited to use the service if its drbi we have created on the residential site. Otherwords if i take down a tree i cant stack it at the curb for the city chipper. Same with leaf removal. However,,, im not saying i havent done it. But if the wrong neighbor sees it, they may bich. Last year my guys were pushing leaves out in a curb and stacking them,, the neighbor came out and fussed cause theyre city had just purchased a new vac,, guess there was a article in the local paper about it and how contractors are contributing to the wear and tear on the equipment illegally.I couldnt really argue w/ the man,, its his taxes and he had me in a head lock so to speak, so i had to leave another site,empty the box,and go over and suck up 2 loads of wet leaves. We also have a free dump organic only. Free up to 1 ton of debri,, $4 per ton thereafter.

Ya, i know all to well about the hard shifting chevies. We just keep mine in 3 all the time.I suspect ill trade it in after the busy session this spring.Except the paint,, its a *** hunk of junk!

Thanks Mike, I'm going to check on this around here. I don't need any fines, or to piss off neighbors. I want them as customers. I can understand the reasoning behind it, especially for a tree removal. But leaves or clippings? Close to the same amount would be there if the homeowner did it themselves. I'll ask when I go in to renew my license.

Both illegal around here. As far as the latter your neighbors may look down on you for it if you do it to much. I've brought trucks home and cleaned out empty mulch bags,or fert bags on occasion but i would regret putting myself in a position where a neighbor might say something. So i limit it. I rent a dumpster at my shop $65 per pick up,, i just call it in. But the landfill i spoke of above is nice enough to offer a huge 120yd dumpster for all trash. they resorted to this because people kept dumping **** mixed in theyre loads. Now they just ask we place it in the big dumpster. Thats really nice of them so im very strict w/ my guys about following theyre policy. Not even a pop can,, you know what i mean? But i wont hesitate to throw crap on our loads to avoid filling my dumpster. Theyve never said a word. They also grind up all that **** and sell it right back to us so maybe thats why?

I'm not sure which town Mad Mowers is from but mine is like his. The city has designated routes for picking up limbs, leaves, etc. I even go by the Public Works Center occasionally to check their location on their route so I can plan my trips to the customers with the debris being picked up in a timely manner without being an eyesore. If I'm going against their policy they haven't said anything in the 7 years I've been doing this.

Its not them you have to worry about. They wont say anything until another tax payer complains. Think about it,,,, you pay city taxes right? You want me dumping my debris in your city while i make money,, thus eventually raising your taxes? Than i laugh all the way to the bank? Like ive said though,, ive done it. I just keep it to a minimum.Very minimum.
