I just bought a 36" Scag (SW36-13KA) for $200.00 with a blown engine. I have the whole thing tore down and ready for sand blasting. While this is getting done I'm going to recondition the other parts. Most of the parts are in good shape.
I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice you can give.
1.) One of the spindles is a little stiff. Should I replace the bearings, or is it easier to just replace the whole spindle?
2.) Do the Scags use the same type spindle on all thier walk behinds? I found "Scag compatible" spindles for $50.00 on the net, but I don't know if they are will work with the mower I have.
2.) I'd like to find a 13HP motor for under $500.00 new. Any suggestions?
3.) What do you think of Briggs & Stratton engines? They're less expensive, and I've found longer warrenties with this brand also. The Kawasaki on my Exmark runs great, but I found a couple 13HP Briggs for less than half the price with a better warrenty than all the Kaw's I looked at.
4.) What's your opinion of used or reconditioned engines?
I'd like to keep this project under $1,000.00, but it's not a big deal if I go over. The goal is to learn the mechanics of these mowers so I can perform all repairs (other than the engine) myself. I'll also have a totally reconditioned 36" mower to use for my business when I'm done.
Thanks in advance,
John
