in alot of areas of the country not everyone is a paid fire fighter. in my county we have 110 fire depts of those only 1 are fully staffed and paid. of those 40 have a day time driver from 6a-4p during the week. 10 others have a driver only on 24/7 and they wear uniforms. the rest are all volunteers and respond from home. normally wearing what they have on and yes they do wear budweiser shirts to calls.
we have 78 ems/als complanies. 30 are full time 24/7, 20 run 6a-10p 7days week. the remaining are volly and do respond in budweisers

I wasn't bagging on the volunteers!!!!! I understand some people will still respond in what ever they are wearing. and I once volunteered also, but I always kept a uniform shirt in my truck so as to a least project a proffesional image. I was merely using that as a mental picture for why I require uniforms. Dont think I was trying to degrade Americas Volunteers with the Budweiser comment, I actually borrowed that phrase from an old Volunteer fire chief friend of mine he said it for years trying to relay the "proffesional Image" to all our volunteers. I think it is great that people will drop everything at the ring of the bell for a perfect stranger. I did it for 14 years Volunteer, now I get paid to do it!!! And as for uniforms....wear what you want to wear....as for me and my guys we will look uniform and gooooood!!!!

at $6 per week my employees can't buy there own clothes for that much. I take it out of their pay check. They love it, khaki pants blue white pin stripe shirt they all look like account managers, I used to have co t-shirts and their pants, way too expensive

I am starting up my business this year and have been thinking of a dress code. I plan on wearing polo type shirts and work type pants. In the summer I will wear shorts.

In the past I have worked in some pretty affluent neighborhoods for both my father and another company. My father and I have always worked shirtless due to heat. My father has worked shirtless for over 30 years. He is one of the more expensive people in his trade. He has never lost business due to working shirtless. The only thing he didnot tolerate were holes in clothes. The other company I worked for didnot have a uniform policy. It was also customary to work shirtless in the summertime. The masonry/landscape trade is a dirty trade at times. Customers were more interested in the end product then the appearance of the workmen.

If I did that I'd be so overloaded with work that I'd never accomplish anything. I have to keep my shirt on to keep the ladies at bay. :p

No Shirts no service

I myself do wear shirts but I do chose not to wear pants. Wead eater is a little ruff but it sure is breezy. Just kidding. I am looking at buying polo style shirts but I cant decide on what type of pants to buy or just use nice blue jeans.

Thanks to all of you fire fighters out there. I was a volunteer in Napa County, CA for about 5 years when I was in college and trained by the CA dept of forestry. I liked the brush fires better, but it was always a b*tch to fight them in turnouts designed for bldgs. Lawn cutting is a good business to be in.
