  • The best ZTR for Residential

This is our second year in business (two sons and myself). I have a full time job and do this after work and on Saturday. Last year we had about 10 accounts and we were mowing with a Kubota 40" tractor mower. This year we would like to get more accounts and I am looking for a good ztr. I ask the dealers and they always say theirs is the best. I asked one repair shop here in town and he said grasshoppers are great because of lower repair cost. Also, would anyone recommend buying used and what is the best size for residential? Any suggestions. Thanks.

I have a snapper 52" and it does the job but I think my next purchase will be a walker with a 42" GHS deck. I also like the ferris IS 3000 because of the suspesion and the way the anti scalp wheels are mounted to the deck.

    Hope this helps.
Also you may want to just take a day and go test drive some until you get something you like.

Watch out for used equipment because whoever is getting rid of it has a reason, if you know what I mean...

We run a Ferris 3000 extreme with a 61" cut. Don't know what size yards you are mowing but the machine will walk thru clean ups and high grass and then make a high dollar yard look extra sharp. The suspension does help on those long days and with all "Z's" the time to mow factor drops. Cut more for less time.

The only Z's you will see on res. around here are out fronts like the Walker...there was one LCO that used to run 44" mid mounts but his guys would spend Allot of time trimming w/21"s.

It will take years for you to decide which mower is best. For now forget what mower is the most popular or that will last forever. Here's what you need to know now.
          1. What mower will work for me? (does it fit my opertion)
          2. What dealer is close by and will give me the best service?
          3. What can I afford at this time?
Every one has their favorite mower, over the past 24 years I have had many types and size when I learned to apply those 3 little rules life got a whole lot easyer. If you can afford new buy it, in my early years I bought many used mowers. I always asked my self this ? How much longer will this mower go, 6 months, a year. When you buy a mower you are buying time. All mowers break down sooner or later, it just depends on how hard you push'em. All commercial mowers are made well, its the engine that will make or break you.
          Good luck and remember this,
You earn revenue from your labor, you earn profit from management.

I have found that the outfront decks like Grasshopper and Walkers are good for getting under trees and shrubs (like in residentials), places that mid mounts can't go. For large wide open mowing, midmounts are faster. If you are going to catch grass the walkers or awesome however the Grasshopper is a better all around outfront deck mower, since you do not have to change the deck to catch or not catch the grass.
