How do you feel about a dixie chopper????

Hello everybody. I have a lot of wide open mowing, that needs to look just as manacured as the grass around the building, but was wondering what everybody thinks of the dixie chopper. I never have been a fan because I asumed they cut terrible, because they look like a go-cart to me. (Ugly) But any way I have seen a few web sites that people used the dixie chopper and they looked great. I think I remember seeing someone on this sites web page also. I have 7 properties that are on average 4 acres each. on each property 1 of the 4 acres is around the buildings and need to be bagged, the other 3 are pretty much wide open mowing. On the wide open mowing, right now I am using a 74" deck that finish cuts better than any smaller deck, but only can mow about 5 mph. I am thinking that if a dixie would work there I could more than double my time. More or less I am just looking for any input what-so-ever on the dixie chopper. I alway (sterotypicaly) thought they were junk until I saw the web sites.

I have no personal expcerience with them, but everyone I have spoken with that uses them seems to like them.

Although, you may want to consider picking up a gang style, multiple front deck style mower, similar to what golf courses use. Jacobsen, toro, deere, kubota, etc.

i use a 50" dixie chopper and love it. most of my accounts are in the 1.5 acre plus range. on sundays i cut three commercial accounts that are right next door to each other that totals 11 acres. i cut from 8:00am till 6:00pm. it is tough bahia and weeds and i have to change the blades out half way thru the day or it is an uneven looking cut with soldiers standing out in the middle of the fields.

the blade tip speed of the chopper is fast and it creates a lot of lift so you get a good cut. bad thing is that it also picks up sand dirt and rocks a lot more and after 4 hours of mowing you need to change blades or sharpen the ones you have on. I have gone thru 16 hours of st augustine grass with out having to sharpen but with bahia grass, or lawns that have a lot bare spots you can't do that.

I got the 50" so i could do residential accounts as well and as long as i can get it thru the gate i can mow as close to anything that a 36" walk behind can.

I'm saving my pennies and building the business up, first year in it, and by next year i plan on adding a 72" xt3200-72 i figure it will cut my mowing time in half for the larger properties.

Is the 74" a Walker? With a pulley change some machines can be made to go faster.

I have the x2001-50 commercial 50" Dixie Chopper I use for residential and small commercial accounts. I was skeptical at first of the Chopper, but once I tried it out, I loved it. The VTC controls are extremely light touch and once you get used to them, you'll love them. I have no complaints whatsoever. And as far as the go-cart thing...look at the bright side...no paint to chip...all stainless steel and no rust. There are multiple power and deck options, including twin engines, gas and a few diesels.
