Last wed. I cut off the tip of my finger using hedge clipers. I asked the doctor if he had any other people come into the emergency room that has done the same. He said he had many people come in that had fingers cut off by hedge clipers; that i was one of many. I know it was my carelssness that caused the accident, but dam those things are dangerous. I just changed hands and got my finger caught in the blade.
I did some research on hedge clipers and double edge clipers have gaurds completly blocking the blade, but single edge clipers have only a small guard on the front side handle sheilding your hand. Some clipers have a metal plate on the blade between the front side handle and the motor. LITTLE WONDER does not have this metal plate. I think there needs to be stricter saftey regulations for the manufacturer on these products.
I just wanted to know if I am the only cluts or if anyone has cut a finger, or if anyone has herd of this happening before. I am thinking of fighting for stricter saftey regulations. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Man those things are dangerous. I know 2 folks who have had this happen. One lady with an electric one, she was reaching to move a cable running down the wall with one hand and it took about half an inch off,the other was a guy on a ladder,lost his balance and it came back on him and kinda "split" his down about an inch,it's kinda forked now,that was a gas machine. here in cincy one of the Bengals football players,true story, picked up a running push mower to trim his hedges,reached under the deck to grab it,lost 8 (eight) tips.
while we're on the subject,last year a friend of mine "shaved" the top of his boot off with an exmark,wake up call, big time. Gees this job is dangerous, I should get an office job,naaaa

Last year one of my guys hit his leg pretty good with a set of double sided 24" John Deere hedge trimmers while he was shaping boxwoods. 10 stiches at the outpatient emergency center and $450 out of my pocket. I paid out of pocket instead of turning it into workmans comp to keep my rates from going up.

You think thats bad, I know a guy that has cut off the tip of the same finger twice using hedge trimmers.

One of our guys did the same thing ... brought the tip of finger with him to hosp they sewed it back on ... it took but he had no feeling from nerve damage. As careful as I am with those things, came close many times cutting myself.

I'm sorry this happened to you Kent. It doesn't make you a clutz. You may be one (just kidding, laughter is good medicine), but not because of this ACCIDENT. You'll go on to be a safer equipment operator, as a result. Heal quick.

Not hedge clipper or mower related. But monday I put a 16 P nail through my finger with a nail gun. Went in the side of my index finger, came out the other side and poked into my middle finger. Not fun.

and these guys probably use chain saws too! Thingss may be hazardous but they don't become dangerous until people are added to the equation.

Thats wild! Glad you're ok. Now your phone doesn't just ring anymore, it ringdingdingdingdings like a 2 stroke. This makes me glad I bought the replacement insurance on my phone.

At a prior job, we had a lute man who was loading barricades onto a truck and as he stacked the top one it closed on his finger, pinching it off at the knuckle closest to the tip. The foreman had been raggin at everyone and had him in a hurry because of poor planning. Then he had the nerve to ask him if he wanted to go to the hospital. This poor guy lost another fingertip a few years before under a storm sewer lid, due to the same foreman becoming distracted and yelling at someone.

A few years ago, my father and I cut fire wood to sell. Talk about a horror story... We had a system for cutting small wood. I would operate the saw, and my dad would feed it. Anyhow, his (my dad's) friend was with us, and I had no knowledge he drank, but found out rather quickly. He thought he could do the same thing with me... the job was going well enough, and he got careless.... he brought the peice of wood up, and I was going down with the saw, I saw that it was improperly positioned, and started to raise my saw and he brought his hand right up into the blade. It gave him a rather sizable cut between his thumb and forefinger. He went to the doctor and asked him did I really need to come here... The doc said no, I only put 175 stitches in your hand..... This guy was drunk at the time... Needless to say, I no longer have help when I cut wood.

Most of my pants around the pockets are cut from the trimmers and my rain pants are so patched up from me cutting them with the trimmers that I don't think that there is much left of the original rubber anymore. Fortunatly, I havn't got my self yet with the trimmers.

Back a couple years I was working for the roads crew in Ontario falling trees and got myself with the small limbing saw. We were finishing up the job and there were some small saplings left so I went in to clear them out. A spindly little alder pinched the blade and kicked it back right into my upper leg, through the saftey chaps. Luckily for me, it was only for stitches and nothing major.
