  • Hourly or per cubic yd. for mulching??

    Hey all,
Wondering if any of you offer muching as a branch off from your lawn mowing business. I have had several customers ask if I would do it. I'd be glad to do the work, but I'm not sure what to charge. Do you charge hourly or per cubic yard installed?? My other question is do you have employees that do the work for you. I currently run a one man show. I will probably end up doing the mulching jobs with myself, and one or two others. What should I charge for a job that probably requires 10-15 cubic yards of mulch. (price of mulch not included.)

Oh and I also figured out that I can get one cubic yd. of mulch from the local nursery for $25. Is that a good deal??

As always I appreciate any imput.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I bid at about 100 per yd installed w/ edging. If edging looks rough , or theres other pruning or clean up work ill need to do than my cost goes to 150 per yd quickly maybe higher depending on what its going to take to detail it out. I use 2 or 3 guys on all mulch jobs over 10 yds,, under 10 ill run 2 guys. I have a couple 40 and up ill run all 4 my fulltimers myself and 2 or 3 partimers. If you decide to take a 15 yd job yourself you may want to consider edging it out one day and dropping mulch the next. I cant do 10 yds myself in 1 day anymore let alone 15,, especially if edging is significant.I always bid a flat rate price,, never tell them yds or per yd.

$100 per yard installed?? Is that for commercial or residential? In my area...there's no way we could charge that for residential. We're charging $50/yd installed and have discovered some of our competitors are charging $45. We get our mulch for $17.50/yd - but we have to pick it up if it's under 6 yds or there's a delivery charge. 6 yds + is delivered free.

Our area won't support those rates

I can usually get $50-55/yard without much complaint for under 8 yards or so (without detailed edging), but it's actually not very profitable at that fees. I'm working toward higher numbers, like $65, but our area just won't support it. So I try to make it up on the trimming and bed cleanup prices.

Like Stacy says, folks here (Charlotte) will install mulch for $40/yd, and blowing trucks are just $37/yd for double shredded hardwood bark.

All others are between $80-150/yd installed..

I charge $75 per yard installed (mulch costs me about $25-$30 per yard). EDGING would be extra and so would weeding. $75 per yard is just for laying the mulch. ( I use double shredded dyed mulch)

Are you guys paying retail prices for your mulch, or are your markets just priced that high? I get double shredded hardwood for $14/yard, and get $45/yard to install it (weeding and edging are extra of course).
