    Good afternoon,

Jack D. would never consider hand pruning unless it involved one of the ladies at the local relaxation establishment. If one is doing anything by hand & not machine in the maint. game they will not be able to clear the type of hrly previously mentioned.

Here I was agreeing with you. Then you come out and say power sheer everything like a uneducated scrub. Maybe you power trim everything like a Formal English Garden Maze. But most landscapes will not express themselves to the fullest with power sheering. You might want to try some selective thinning by drop pocket or drop crotch method. It would do your ornamentals a world of good.

Of course I also realize your Canadian dollar is not worth anything so you must make as much as you can because Canadians won't spend any money. Here in my part of the States most up scale customers want and will pay for a quality job.

I beg to differ. I've tried as hard as possible to build my business on long term relationships with my customers and their properties. This means taking whatever steps necessary to provide a beautiful healthy landscape that will provide years of enjoyment to the property owner. Even if it means selectively hand pruning 50, seventy-five year-old English Boxwoods (which I've personally done on one of my properties twice a year over the past three seasons). I know it sounds cliche, but I truly sleep better at night knowing I'm doing the right thing instead of racing through every job as fast as I can.

BTW, I can't say that I often pull $100/manhour doing anything, but in the long run the repeat business from annual maintenance customers beats shearing Crepe Myrtles into balls any day of the week.

Jack D. will not perform any service that does not involve a gasoline powered engine and hiring someone w/the skills necessary to hand prune is certainly not feasible.

Please remember when a long term relationship forged on service provision ends, one is left only w/ tangible realities. Do not overestimate customer loyalty and customer understanding of the tasks you diligently
perform at less than peak efficiency for the sake of quality.

Jack D. has assembled 3 of the 4 types of trimmers one must purchase to ensure a $100 plus hrly when performing hedging services. From left to right; the dual side short bar (24"), Long Shaft Articulating, Single Sided Long Bar (40"). Located in Jack D.'s other shop and missing from the group shot is is perhaps one of the most versatile yet less specialized trimmers; the mid size (Short Shaft) such as the Echo SHC 2100. Absent due to efficiency deficiencies are any hand prunning instruments.

Just so happens that I have the only tool needed to keep most ornamental landscape plants full and healthy sitting on my desk.
