Woody brings up some good points........
I would like to add that you should not make the false assumptiuon that you can be "inexpensive" at first to gain customers and then raise your prices later. That will NOT work. Any customers that you pick up because you are the cheapest guy will likely drop you as soon as someone else comes along and offers a lower price OR when you decide that you need to charge more because you did not know your cost of doing business.......your customers will look at you like you are crazy (thinking you are trying to "rip them off") and drop you.
So...it is VERY important that you understand all costs and price accordingly from the very start. You do not want the reputation of being the cheapest guy around....you want the reputation of being the BEST and REASONABLY priced! Because then....customers will come to you...and price will not matter to them (for the most part) because they will want YOU to do the work!
i.e. I have picked up customers this year that are neighbors of existing customers.....they came to me and said "I want you to take care of my property.......please do what you did for Mr. xyz.....". They don't even talk $$$$. Of course, I give them a proposal with a price and right away it is "Great, do it!".
They don't even get competitive bids from others.......
