Its May 11th and you receive a call from a concerned home owner regarding a problem in his turf. He breifly describes yellow spots in his turf areas that have caused him problems 2 years and running.
You arrive promptly at the residence and are immediately greeted by Mr.Smith and begin your evaluation of his turf areas.
Right off the rip you identify a Bluegrass blend.
You immediately notice some yellow pale looking 6-12" clusters but upon further inspection you also see individual plants infected.Kinda looks like chlorosis but that would be to easy,,, and whats up w/ the individual plants infected?
You pull a sample to get a face to face look at the culperate. You see yellowed , and somewhat stunted brown plants. Kinda yellow stripes on a few and even black stripes that run the entire length of the plant.
Then you notice the infected areas are growing more upright.
Now you take a look and notice a high level of thatch. Temps have been generally between 55 and 65 degrees and its been a pretty wet season thus far. And actually last year was fairly wet also.
You learn the turf is 7 yrs old and that this problem began last year about this time but seems to be more widespread than it was. The cutomer also informs you that last summer he struggled w/ his lawn no matter how much he watered and no matter what his old applicator did. Says it was just raggy looking and the color was just not there,,, especially in the areas where infection was high. But that it seemed to stop spreading. He says it didnt appear quite this early and wasnt as fast last year but it is more alarming now. Says his applicator last year had a make ship spreader, 17" forearms ,smelled like a hooker and always had some greasy old side kick w/ him that talked to much, Said he had Florida tags on the front of his truck and Pennsylvania tags on the back of his truck,, and his side kick made it a point to show all his license ever time they showed up and would not shut up about all his degrees.
He also shows you a bunch of big rutts where the applicator got his cartoon spreader stuck on the slope and trashed his turf. He asks if you can fix those areas.
What is your diagnosis? And what is your prescription?
