  • The stone a green gets a new transmission

I have just ordered two new 5 speed 9 spline transmissions for the stone a green (which is around 36 inches wide) and my 62" Toro belt drive.

With the extra speed 5th gear should produce a ground speed of 6.0 mph with 13" tall drive tires.

"Theoretically" using the double overlap method of application (throwing the material to the previous wheel mark) and using granular urea which the spreader throws a total of eight feet, how many square feet of turfgrass can the stone a green fertilize in one hour traveling 6.0 mph at 100% efficiency?

A mile is 5280 feet times 6 miles per hour equals 31,680 feet per hour.

Throwing to the wheel marks which are 36 inches or 3 feet wide means you would lose 2.5 feet off of the 8 foot throw. Now how this is calculated is simple. The spreader Throws 8 feet minus the wheels of 3 feet. The remaining 5 feet is on two sides, or 2.5 feet of over lap on each pass. Therefore each pass is covering 5.5 Feet.

5.5 feet times 31,680 equals 174,240 Sq ft.

Now this is "Theoretically" since we are not taking turn around time into account.

Darn I should have let Harmon Students answer this question. I am sure they could have gotten the answer.

Now since I rained on Professor Stones parade. Can any one answer this question for the 4 speed transmission??

Let's give Mr. Seascrape a chance to answer. Must likely he is outside in the cold damp weather raking the leaves of rich folk with a bamboo rake, a tarp, and a hand blower.

Since he is always boasting about how much money he makes maybe he can figure out the difference per hour of profit at 6 mph vs. 4.5 mph on a 400k square foot site with a $500 net after direct material costs.

I don't think that is fair to ask Seaweed to answer a question that is far be on his mental abilities. After all he would have to substitute one number and rework the Formula that is already given. He is much to busy cutting down the wrong tree today to spend his time figuring out which number to substitute. Then comes the question on how a calculator works.

L.P. What would you say is the life expectancy of those 5-speeds---with and without annual maintenance? Do you usually take them apart, clean and regrease on an annual basis. My hours are around 250-300 in the third year on a 36 Metro. I hoping to do it this winter. Any advice? No problems indicated, just wanting to prevent them. Gracias.

There is no need to do anything to the transmissions especially if you are just walking behind the mower.

My problems are do to using them with hydro type sulkies and heavy duty operators. Even with a new transmission that was installed last season I have blown the small splines off the output shafts on the big 62" belt drive.

That's why I am changing over to the 5 speed 9 spline setups on my belt drives that will be "keepers" and not sold off as salvage units next spring.

And then there is the bottom end of the transmissions. After about 500 hours the crappy bearings and input shaft wears to the point of where the traction belt will not stay on the pulley. But the bearings and shaft can be easily replaced for about $60 in parts.

OK, thanks. I'll watch the bearing underneath. I did have to change out the tensioner pulley at about 200 hours which surprised me. The following is getting a little off topic, but, I've set up a syringe with synthetic grease and added a little more to the new bearing as well. I was able to add to the old one to keep it going for a bit and quiet it down. It's easy with an o-ring pick, or just the needle if your careful to roll the lip of the seal back while turning the bearing and inserting at the same time. This is somewhat similar to George Costansas "move".

if you are making 220 bucks an hour at 6 miles an hour, wouldn't it be 165 at 4.5

Mr. Noresidencefire your answer is close enough to be correct if we were throwing grenades at a "Bullseye".
