License to Apply Bagged Fertilizer

I know you are suppost to have a license for chem app. but i wanted to know if I can appy the bagged fertilizers without one. Im located in Tx.

In texas, im not sure, i wouldnt think you would have to. In pennsylvania you dont need one as long as that is all it is, stricly fert.

Check with your state Dept. of Agriculture. Here in Ky you can't apply anything to anyones lawn (except your own) without a license.

I was told that we can apply anything a homeowner would be able to purchace and we don't need a license. If the homeowner would not be able to purchace it... we would need a license.

I am considering starting a lawn care business. Services would include mowing, trimming and edging. Would this require a license or certification? Would the application of non-herbicidal/pesticidal, granular fertilizer require licensing or certification?

A pesticide applicator's license is only required if you are going to apply pesticides for hire. In this instance, to license with the TDA, you will also be required to obtain a nursery/floral certificate from our agency. By having the nursery/floral certificate, you are exempt from having to license with the Structural Pest Control Board. Also, if you are only going to apply fertilizers, you do not need to obtain a pesticide applicator's license.

That means that the statement below is not true. The crappy Scotts fertilizer with crabgrass control that is covering the shelves at Lowes and Home Depot is a restricted pesticide if you're applying commercially. Don't take the risk. Just take the test and get the license. You'll get busted eventually.

I just got off the phone with TDA. They said that as long as the fertilizer does not contain any pesticide or herbicide... no license is required.

HOWEVER... If you pour boiling water on an ant pile and get paid for it... you better have a license. He said the fines are pretty heavy.

I just found the fines... application without a license carries a $2000 per incident fine.

Dude three people gave guesses to the guy's question without giving him any real facts. I didn't know the answer either seeing how I don't do business in TX so I GOOGLED IT and gave them some useable info.

i think if you did a history of his posts you will see that he always gives very good answers to whatever it may be about. he always gives guys links to other sites that will give someone the correct answer and not a guess.he is also a pretty big guy so i doubt he gets his a$$ kicked very often.lol!!!!

In Illinois you must have a pesticide licensce to apply fertilizer if it is for for profit. Of course, each individual city want a piece of the action and requires a contractors license to do business in their town which ranges anywhere from $50-$100 bucks. Some of them also require a surety bond from your insurance agent that costs another $50 bucks. Best thing to do is to call your local extension office and ask them. Also, find out about the contractors licenses. My first year/ first day out, I got slapped with a $100.00 ticket for not having the contractors license in one of the towns I was in. Of course, I didn't know at the time and had to pay the ticket and the $100.00 fee for the lisence and the bond. Man I was pissed!
