if you are doing small lawns and applying high N, just get a Scotts handheld and calibrate off the bag....

Any good ap'er knows NEVER to follow the settings on the spreader, they are a guide....
One figures the square feet and configures the weight of product that way, THEN uses the spreader settings as a guide...
To think that a spreader by some company that isn't even out west, or ANY spreader is wacky....calibration slips....I think this was one of the first things one learns in applications.... good luck!
maybe look into an earthway

Lesco is the best, Its worth the $$ to have a stainless steel framework that isn't eaten away by your product. Its better than Spyker (which is 2nd best).
Scotts hand held is good for spreading granular pre emergent herbicide but not practicle on large lawns--too much wasted time running back to the fert bag.

I have used nothing but Earthway spreader's with no problems. I use a C22ss, C24R and C24SS. They get washed at the end of each day and sprayed with WD40. I see more Earthway spreader's around here than Lesco or Spyker spreader's. I can not comment on the other brands, never used them.

My negative outlook on earthway is due to one that I have that the screws holding the hopper to the frame walked out and it is just a painted steel frame, not stainless (I am aware they also do stainless). It still gets used for seed, but that's about it.
