NJ is renewed every year for $75 a year. You need to take recertification credits every 5 years but don't need to retake the test unless you fail to get your required number of credits every 5 years.
To sit for the test in NJ, you either need to work 40 hours for a licensed operator or take a training class in both the basic and core areas. The NJ DEP website has links for registered classes that you can take - just need to dig through the pages for them. I took my courses at www.pesticidetraining.com (For NJ, PA, NY, VT). The teacher "Reg" was the NJ DEP department head for 20+ years and was a wealth of information - both technical and enforcement related.
I took the basic, turf & ornamental tests back to back in one sitting and thought they were a piece of cake. There were a lot of common questions between all three and since the category tests were open book - it was extremely simple to find the answers word for word from the book if you didn't already know them. Just study the review books available at your local county extension office and you'll be fine.
Good Luck,
Jason
