  • New York pesticide application

    Hello and please help:

I have read the NY state rules about becoming a pesticide applicator. I perform turf maintence (cut grass, trim, etc..) however, I want to apply fertilizer and pesticides to enhance my business. The NY state rules state that I need a license but that I must have two years verifiable experience on applying pesticides. I am self employeed in my own lawn care business, and cannot get two years experience working for someone else. I am taking the pesticide course this winter, hoping to add a license. Am I just out of luck or is there any way around this?

    Thanks for your responses!
    Thanks for the help!~

I Don't know NY law but Florida is hard to get certified in and takes three years experience.

I suggest the serious try and get with a certified operator and work part time to get the time in. Here in Florida I will help anyone in my close proximity as long as I can make a Little money and keep it all legal. All they really have to do is sell accounts and do some of the application. If they are alright taking care of an account this become part of a routine. I need them close enough to supervise their work and of course train them so they don't mess up.

I have had many contact me by PM about this. Unfortunately they a have been too far away in many cases.

If you are taking the pesticide course this winter, after the 30 hr training course, you will be able to take the core & category (3a) right then, they usually will schedule it just after your training. If you pass the core & category, you are licensed then. No you don't have to work for someone else for two years. Your first year licensed, however, you will not be able to access restricted herbicides. After your first year, with an additional 12 credits that are category specific, you can petition DEC, and they will upgrade your license so you can then access any restricted herbicides. Where are you taking your training?

JR's a wealth of NY knowledge. I think he was reading the apprentice cert requirements to transition to tech and then applicator. As Ric said, try to get with a certified applicator in your area who can teach you the ropes.

Homer: It's called a "lawnmower". I invented it. Want one?

Well, I certainly don't know it all, but I do know how to get there from where he is right now. One good thing to remember, there is always someone out there that may have the answer if you don't. Yes, I am still a technician, for this year only. I will get those 12 credits this winter. Being a technician, you can still access certain control products, spray roundup, and have fertilization programs. It does restrict you some, I do however see that as not necessarily a bad thing as you gain additional experience. My.02.
