  • All southern turfgrass experts/ weed problem

Please help with this. I applied pre m plus fert in early March. I rained about 36 hours after I applied it. Lawn is in birmingham, al and has been neglected last year. But wasn't this bad with weeds until now. Any help appreciated.
    Bermuda grass by the way.
    Thanks

Pre-M is only one element of weed control. It has to go down before the seeds germinate and will only control certain weeds. Proper mowing is going to be fundemental. I don't care what anybodu says, mow the bermuda 1" weekly during the growing season. You may need to core aerate the yard. Get a soil test to determine the proper fertiziler and PH. You are going to have to go with post emergent weed control. I can't tell what weeds are present but I'd suggest application of 3-way for broad leaf and MSMA for starters for grassy weeds. (If you're not licensed for pest control, you'll need supervision at the least) BTW, if it's shady, you're not going to get a good stand of bermuda.

cjm if you want this job, I'll be more than glad to give it to you. She is almost willing to pay anything to fix it. I'm just trying to figure out a direct way to go. Soil sample, Pull crabgrass, cut grass, post emergent, spot spray.... then see what happens? Overseed maybe. I dunno. Kill me now.

I'm not licensed for pest control... I think I'm going to let this one go. I will still do mowing, and maintenance but no fertilzer etc. Its out of control.

why is everyone elses lawn in that neighboorhood free of weeds then? I will prolly pay someone to handle all the fert and squirt. I hate bermuda grass.

No product will deliver results overnight except round up with scythe. Which actually produces visable results in four hours.

scalp it every 5 days. I've only cut this ladies low once, and I think it needs it again. Most lawns in her area are a lot lower than hers. but the lawn is very unlevel and hard to cut low without scalping. should i do it anyway??

                  she doesn't water it either\

Scalping is only going to promote the growth of more weeds. I cut nothing but Bermuda here and I am familiar with Birmingham having lived there a few years back. You have the pre emerge down but that is for future weeds. I would start with a broad leaf weed killer and mow with a height of 1.5 inches. Letting Bermuda grow a little taller will also help prevent weeds. I have weed prone lawns I cut at 2-2.5 inches with no problems. After you put down the broad leaf killer wait 2 weeks and see whats left. I would expect that by then you will have greatly reduced the number of weeds. It may very well take several applications to get rid of everything. In the meantime begin a fert program to encourage the Bermuda to start growing. I would also tell the customer that even though Bermuda is drought tolerant she needs to start watering if she wants her lawn to look nice. If you have bare spots then throw down some seed and keep the seeded areas damp until you have new grass growth. Remember it is a partnership between you and the customer. If she is unwilling to do her part (watering) then what she pays you to do will be much less effective. I have a customer who refuses to water so I sold her a timer for each spigot and every time I mow I place her sprinkler and turn the timer on 2 hours and move on down the road. At least her yard is getting water once a week and I charge her an extra 10.00 per cut to move the sprinkler where I want it and turn on the faucet. Have patience with this yard and you'll get it back in shape. And don't forget to make money on all the work. If you hire a sub to squirt and fert have him bill you and you add a little to the cost and then include it with your mow bill to your customer. Your squirt and fert guy should be able to get the lawn under control with out any difficulty.
