  • Talstar before re-sodding....

I have re-graded portions of my home's lawn, and want to put down Talstar 0-0-7, today and re-sod on monday or tuesday.

Anyone see a problem with that?

I don't see any problems other than chasing away your mole crickets, chinch bugz, ants and so forth.

That metod would basically change your delivery method because its typically delivered "in" the turf and not under.

You may want to talk with Stone before your do it.

        I do see a problem.

The propose of combining Talstar on 0-0-7 is to allow it to hold on to the turf better and give it a longer control period. The Potash helps the Talstar become systemic.

What is your target insect and what kind of sod are you laying??

Talstar while great on ants will not control mole crickets. Like Seatrout said
"its typically delivered "in" the turf and not under."
If your sod has insects in it from the sod farm, you are not controlling them.

If you are putting down Bahia, may I suggest you spend a little more money and apply Top Choice because the window of opportunity is right now to control mole cricket nymphs. Top Choice under the sod would control mole crickets better and you will also get the added advantage of controlling ants.

Other types of sod not effected by mole crickets, it would be better to treat with Talstar after the sod is laid. The window of opportunity for Merit to control both grubs and mole crickets is still open and applying Merit along with Talstar would be an even better choice along with a good starter fertilizer.

BTW If this is your beach house. St Augustine or Bermuda would be better choices because of Salt Tolerance. If you have a real salt spray problem, then Seashore Paspallium would be even a better choice.

Can you feed turf 10-20-20 ag fert like I do up North or is there too much weed growth to see any benefit to warm season turf especially in the summer rainy season?

I had a Chinch problem, and I graded out 90 percent of it already. St A is whats going back down.

            Thanks.

                Prof Hydro Drive

I think the 10-20-20 would be an excellence choice of starter fertilizer this time of year with the up coming rainy season about to start. I would apply it at the 1 lb per thousand Potash-Phosphorus rate. This would help with both root mass and extension. The lower rate of Nitrogen would help excessive top growth and the need to stress new sod with excessive cutting. I am a firm believer in Potash and try to apply it on a one to one ratio to all warm season turf. Golf Greens are normally fertilized with a 1 to 3 ratio in the summer months. I like to follow suit on St Augustine to build stress and disease tolerance for the dry season.

Phosphorus (the center number) causes better seed germination and therefore should not be applied to established turf because of weed control. Phosphorus surface and ground water contamination is a problem in all of Florida, But especially in North East Florida. Therefore the availability of 10-20-20 in GeeVee's area might be a problem. 10-20-20 is generally used as a seed crop fertilizer for crops like corn & wheat etc. Atrazine and Asulox are the weed killers of choice in these seed crops and must be applied heavy.

                  ?????

I've never had problems controlling mole crickests with Talstar.

In fact, I have seen a big reduction of mole cricet problems over the last five years or so and I contribute a lot of that to the broad and exstenvive use of bifenthrin.

You are not controlling Mole Crickets, You are suppressing them and then very little.

There are products that can be applied in windows of opportunity that will better control Mole Crickets, Top Choice being the preferred. However Talstar only suppress Mole Crickets. "Windows of Opportunity" is the key phrase here. The Terms Control and Suppression mean two different things.

BTW studies done several years ago found that if slit seeded into the soil, Bifenthrin was effective on grubs. The problem here is application on real life turfs outside of university test plots.
