  • help with some weedy beds

Got a customer who bought a house last year- 2000 SF of the worst beds I've ever seen. All last year we killed the weeds completely dead with round-up only to see them return again and again and again. (granted it was different kinds of weeds each time, but still very aggravating.

Just got off the phone with him and I've got permission to do whatever I need to do to make sure they stay nice and clean throughout 2008. The only exception is he likes the stuff in them so I can't just take off the first few inches of soil and start over.

So, what should I do? I know the mulch/soil in there is completely contaminated with weed seeds. Last year I saw everything from clover to dallas grass. My thoughts are to start with a strong pre-emergent right now. Followed by a good mulch job next month and another round of pre-emergent on top of the mulch. Follow-up in application every 2-3 months.

PS how long until the buried weed seeds are no longer a huge threat?

Make sure you're not mixing your RU too hot. If it's too hot you're not getting a complete kill. It's just killing off the top, the part that you see and never gets down to the roots. Some weeds take multiple apps. You also should be putting down some kind of pre emergence which will help.

try quick-pro for the weeds that are already there and snapshot for the ones who haven't hatched yet. you will have to water the snapshot in real good.

I've been using quick pro for a while now. Love it. Why did you switch Scott?

Thanks for the heads on snapshot- Just read the app instruction and they want 1/2" of water within 3 days! That is some serious watering.

                Which Prosecutor??

Prosecutor Swift Action is the exact same thing as Quik-Pro, just relabeled.

Lesco is in-route to most of my customers which is basically the only reason.

It appears the Physiology of Bio Chemistry must work completely different on Autotrophic plants in the Panhandle of Florida as compared to the Rest of the known world.

I'll be the first to say, this requires a pesticide license........Ya got one, if so maybe the snapshot will work out for you....................
Who really cares if ya got a license, every lawnjockey I see has a sprayer hung on their trailer anyways...................................And I know most of them and I know they do not have a license.................................

i'm glad this thread came out....

i can start saving $$$ now cause when i been mixing my quickpro, i double and sometime triple the amount so that way when i spray a weed it ain't coming back from the dead like i did.

OK Well I cleaned the beds up today as far as removing the leaves go. I guess the warm weather last month had some effect on the perennials because I got little green shoots coming up everywhere!

I talked to my local seed store and they quoted 95 bucks for 50lbs of snapshot which is way more than I need, but they don't sell it in a smaller quantity. The plan is to spray the current batch of chickweed and clover with quick-pro on Firday then put down the snap-shot/mulch at the same time next week.

I figure I'll water in each section as I work on the next section since rainfall is sporadic these days. The rep said that at 8lb/1000 sf I should get 8 months of control which would get me into next fall almost.
