Ed I think the climate in both the area we work in is very similar.

Depending on the summer it might be a little hotter in the summer and winter in PA.

Tell me how much fertilizer and what type have you put down this season? Are you applying the bag rate of 1lb of N per 1k sq ft?

BTW a soil test would have no factor in my decision to apply a product at this time of year.

To date this season on non sports turf I have applied just one application in late March/early April of lesco 25-5-10 w/1.5%FE 40% poly coated urea at half bag rate or 1/2 lb of N per 1k sq ft. With all the rain we have been having even the crap unfert turf needs mowing every week.

Now before I show my hand I would like to see a few more replies to this discussion.

My point of view is from a landscape gardener not a 5 step N bandit.

These are two different opposing points of view. Since I only do full service residential work my applications are not geared to the big green hose-pulling crowd where the homeowner gets stuck mowing every 4 days and loves it.

So have you applied any fert in May to your full service accounts?

And are you still bagging with the walker?

I'm a student of the Industry and want to learn more. I'll be back on the terf next year and would like some advice on Fert's. I'll be getting my applicators license so that's covered. I need to learn how, what, when & why's of fert. I need expert advice without a bunch of fluff. Where do ya all recommend? I will be operating in Mid-Central to Southern parts of Illinois.
        Thanks

I would be using this product no matter what a soil test said at this time of year.

No split apps. I am down to 4 apps of fert and one of lime at the end of the season to help decompose all the organic matter from leaf grinding.

My total yearly N is just over 2 lbs per 1k sq ft.

I suggest you put the 28-3-10 away and use that in August.

The key to keeping turf green all summer w/o irrigation is
Lesco 5-10-31 with 10%FE. But I only apply at 1/2 lb of K per sq ft or around 25K sq ft per bag.

Now those in the tall fescue hot as hell transition zone may want to apply at a rate of 1 lb of K per 1k sq ft.

I would assume that every region's soil will lack certain things....ours lacks K.
