It depends which organism you want to discuss: Structural root rots caused by Basidiomycete decay fungi or feeder root rots caused by Oomycetes fungi. The Oomycetes are in the genera Pythium and Phytophora and are commonly invoved in damping off in newly germinated grass seed. Other fungi in the grouping are Rhizoctonia spp,. Fusarium spp., and Scleroctium spp. in the Fungi Imperfecti.

Cool, wet, highly organic, neutral to basic soils favor damping off. Close spacing and close cropping (as in a nursery situation) also favor damping off.

Is this what you had in mind?

I feel like I failed grade school 101 where I was suppose to learn how to read for comprehenson.

Well, I went to Wikapedia and ran around some of the links until i came up with a piece on Damping off. I got to thinking how rhizoctontia was probably like California's gift to the rest of the nursery world on the west coast of Phytophera remormium (spelling?) also known as Sudden Oak Death.

Both of these characters are just plain present in soil waiting for something to attack and are probably somewhere hitch-hiking in infected compost and soil mediums sold in nursery plant products. It does not reproduce by spores, but it is easy to transfer the mycelium around with gardening tools.

Did I get the gold star?

Red thread is spread via mowers, so ya can't spread it by sitting on a toilet seat

I think when ya falll down with your MILF after drinking all of that corn stuff, you is spreading more than rhizoctonia.

i have heard that red thread can be spread this way. i've heard brown patch can be spread that way. me hearing ain't no proof though. somebody give me some proof that it can or can't. red thread also ain't no rhizoctonia disease as far as i know.

I know that red thread isn't rhizoctonia, but fungal diseases in general have characteristics that overlap and mode of transportation is one of them. I haven't spent much time acquainting myself with brown patch since most of my problems is with red thread.

If the fungal disease in question doesn't reproduce thru spores, then its only other means of transport is hitch hiking.
