Anybody seeing japanese beetles? Ive had 3 major infestations in the past 2 weeks here in ohio. Ive never had a problem w/ them but i lost a 8' heritage birch in 2 days on a res. Im pretty down on myself about because i havent personally visited the site in 2 weeks. Than this happened. Ive been running other projects and it got away from me. I got a call via nextel from my mowing crew informing me there was problem. I went promptly but its to late. Its a show piece tree i bought at a trade show and my client payed dearly for it 2 yrs ago. I offered to replace the tree but where ill find 1 of this caliber i dont know yet. My client said just find 1 and bill him so i assume hes not upset. I found them in 3 other trees and treated them. this birch however had literally a thousand humping bugs in it and the top 35% is chewed. I also spotted a good # of them about 30 miles away at another site and have submitted a work order for treatment monday. I also recall seeing them at a local super america but theyre not my problem. Guess at this point theyll go back in the ground lay eggs, hatch and start eating roots so i better get on my toes.

Seriously, milky spore works good, and for 25 years with one app, but you need to put it down everywhere, not in the checkerboard pattern they want you to use. It takes a while (like till next year) to affect the grubs, but it will kill them. The beneficial nematodes will go up to 36 inches in search of them. Much more agressive, but only a small percentage winter over. The BIGGEST problem is that the beetles fly. So, if you can get a whole neighborhood to treat their lawns, you can accomplish something. Otherwise, be it chemical or organic, the things will fly in and chow down on their favorite tree/bush/shrub, within a certain radius.
