Yeah Roundup Pro seems to be taking about a week here, but I've had several weeds kind of laugh at it lately - mallow, puncture vine, etc. They seem to have good roundup resistance.
Thanks for the info Gary. Kilz All, by Hi Yield also has a higher percentage. Seems they got the labeling approved for spraying a higher percentage too.

I, too buy no-name 41% glyphosate and mix it down myself. Why pay Monsanto to simply mix it with water. I also add plain dish soap at about 2% as a surfactant.
By the way, I read something from Rutgers that more and more plant were become Roundup resistant, and that some seed companies were deliberately breeding resistant soybeans.

Such is the beauty of evolution. Every living thing will eventually change in order to stay alive. If it doesn't, then it dies off.
One instance is the tree that the giraffe eats. The giraffes were eating such a large number of a particular tree leaf. The trees didn't have a chance to recover the leaves before the giraffes were right back eating them again. The trees developed a poison that occured about 10 minutes after the leaves were being eaten. The giraffes then received a very bad taste. WAIT. It doesn't end there. The giraffes figured this out and only ate each tree for 10 minutes. Well the trees weren't quite satisfied with this. They developed a way to communicate with other trees of the same species in the area. They would send out spores in the air which would be carried to other trees. The spores, when received, would tell the trees to start making the poison immediately. It was kind of a distress signal. The giraffes had to find another variety of tree to eat until their favorite tree had enough leaves on it to let them eat. This is how a species survives. It evolves and adapts.
None of this happened over millions or thousands of years.
It happened over only DECADES.
Evolution occurs slow sometimes, but most often will happen quicker than you might think.
The fact that weeds are becoming more tolerant of certain certain chemicals, is just a sign that they are wise to us.
We have become immune to certain antibiotics because we take them all the time.
Why should weeds be any different. They are alive and want to continue to live.

It has not one thing to do with evolution!
Resistance to Roundup is caused by Monsanto. Yep! Go do the research yourself. Here is what is happening......
Monsanto, being greedy bastards, come up with "Roundup Ready" crops. Frankencrops actually. They have genetically engineered the crops to REQUIRE the use of Roundup! That's right, folks, if you plant the seeds, and the little plants DON'T get sprayed with Roundup by a certain stage in their life, THEY DIE! All they want to tell you about is that the crops tolerate Roundup. But that isn't the whole story. Neat, huh??? They sell you the seeds, then you HAVE to buy the Roundup too!
The big problems with this are, the DNA from the frankencrops is getting loose. Thus, we are looking at NEW SUPERWEEDS! That's right, because the pollen is blowing all over the place, they are finding that the weeds are taking on these characteristics!
Here is another one for you. Monsanto likes to check crops to see if they carry the "Roundup Ready" gene. If they DO have that gene, and you don't have a license to grow them, you are done for. There is a Canadian couple that has lost EVERYTHING they own. Why? Because their NEIGHBOR was growing "Roundup Ready" crops, and some of the pollen made it to their fields. Genetic testing showed the "Roundup Ready" gene, and Monsanto sued them for "stealing" Monsanto's "intellectual property". Look it up on the web if you don't believe me.
Another great idea from these greedy bastards is "terminator" technology. In the past, farmers used to use seeds from their current crops for next years planting. But, with the new "terminator" technology, these frankencrops produce seeds that are sterile. That means that, every year, you have to buy new seeds from the small handful of companies that control the world's seed production. So, if the world wants to eat, they will pay whatever the asking price is. PERIOD!
Think I'm full of bull?? Here is some good reading for you.
We can all look forward to some new superweeds appearing in the next decade or two. Ones that tolerate everything, except the old time-tested standby approaches...... Pulling them, or burning them with weed torches.

Woody,
Please read the whole following post.
I should have mentioned all of the genetic engineering in my post. I was simply stating that things do become resistant NATURALLY ALSO. I have read a few articles on the Nelson's. I feel for them, having to battle a giant that they probably won't win against, because Monsanto gives tons of money to the politicians, beaurocrats and I'm sure some top officials.
You can't really say that it has not ONE THING to do with evolution. Things don't want to die. They do what they can to survive. Sure, genetic engineering plays a part, but it is not the WHOLE picture. Remember what I said about the antibiotics that we take. We as humans now have drug resistant diseases because we take antibiotics like candy the moment we get a VIRUS. The fact is that YOU CAN'T KILL A VIRUS. It has to run it's course. Even then, it sits there waiting to be awoken at a later date. Look at HIV. As soon as you introduce a drug to fight it, it immediately starts to change it's molecular structure. It rearranges itself to become a new virus. That is why people will continue to die of it and viruses like it. Why do you think it takes someone 5 Tylenol instead of 2 to get rid of a headache or a fever. Because we take them the moment we don't feel right. We feel pain or get a headache because our body is trying to tell us that something is not right. Over the counter (OTC) pills don't cure. They simply DULL the pain, along with our senses. We get a fever because our body is raising the temperature in our bodies to kill off whatever is invading it. So, we feel very hot and get the chills. What if your body didn't do this. The virus might take over and kill you. Be thankful that you throw up and get a fever.
I know alot about how things evolve and adapt. I am currently studying epidemiology. (The study of diseases). I also have taken classes in microbiology and molecular biology. I am planning to get my doctorate in nanotechnology, with a minor in quantum physics.
You want to talk about (genetic) engineering. Wait a few decades. Everything will be self this and self that. There are already companies working on self cleaning glass and bathroom tiles. No more mold. You might own a pair of Dockers right now that are stain resistant. Nanotechnology at work. If you have a bad liver, no more transplants, you will be able to swallow a pill and that pill will deliver nano robots to take apart the bad part of the liver and rearrange the atomic structure to now make it NEW again. Not LIKE new, but BRAND SPANKING NEW. You might be able to live 200 years or longer by simple renewing all of the necessary body organs. There are large pharmaceutical companies working on this technology as we speak. You could literally pluck atoms from the air and arrange them in the correct configuration (structure) and build an SUV. This will be "bigger" than the Industrial Revolution. Except in reverse. We will have automobile manufacturing plants the size of a small warehouse instead of 2 miles long. We are running out of space on a computer chip. The microprocessor really can't get much smaller without going "nano". Now we are talking Quantum Physics and Mechanics to which I happen to have a library of books on in my bedroom for light reading.
Farmers will be a thing of the past because companies will "make" food from hydrogen atoms.
Most of this technology probably won't really begin to show any kind of an impact for the next 15-30 years. It will however be a huge part of our children's future.
Everything plays a part. Some are bigger than others.
Some companies make a certain product only to make another product to counter the first product.
Unfortunately, it all a part of making money for these big companies. They either don't realize or they don't care that they are HURTING INDIVIDUALS.
I apologize for rambling on and on here, but I am trying to show you that thare is ALWAYS more than one factor (variable) as to why things change or become resistant.
Your point, Woody, is a BIG part of why things are becoming more resistant. It is well taken and respected.
Thank You,
MikeLast edited by mikeslawnservice; 07-28-03, 01:33 AM.

Mike:
Not to start a pissing contest, but yes, I can say for certain that it is not evolution. Why? Because the "Roundup Ready" gene has been found in these superweeds. Since this gene does not occur ANYWHERE in ANY plant in nature, we can be quite sure that this is what is happening.
As for nanotech, as of this point in time, it is purely science fiction. Is it theoretically possible? Yes. Is it plausible? Practical? Who knows. We'll see if the human race even makes it that long.
The problem I have with genetic modification is that, while the scientists would like to tell you that it is safe, has been going on naturally for eon, etc., they are just BS'ing us. This is the FIRST TIME IN HISTORY that a FISH can mate with a STRAWBERRY! We have NO IDEA what the ramifications are. NONE! But, the department of agriculture says it is ok to do this, feed it to the masses, and see what happens. There is NO "testing" to check for safety. People are being BS'ed about the safety of the food the whole time. Basically, it all comes down to MONEY! Patent all of the "modified" plants. Pull all of the naturally occuring ones off of the market. See where it is going??
Anyhow, most of this has nothing to do with the original subject. Except for the fact that the "Roundup Ready" gene has been found in superweeds. And we can expect to see more of the same. They use a gene from salmon in the new fangled "fishberries", actually strawberries, to keep low temperatures from affecting them. What happens when this gene ends up in weeds that normally die during the winter months? Are we going to have to spray Trimec in the snow? Some of the new corn that is grown has insecticide in its pollen. A great idea, right? The corn defends itself. One problem. Monarch butterflies lay eggs on milkweed, which grows around corn fields. And the corn pollen is wiping them out. Soon, they may be another extinct species.
Think about this once. Computers are FAR simpler that genetic engineering. We can't even write software that will run 100% of the time without a single crash! And we have been doing that for decades longer than we have been playing with genetic engineering! If scientists built a computer-based machine to control the weather of the entire planet, would you trust that machine to NEVER crash? To NEVER screw up in any way, shape, or form? Not me. This is parallel to what is being done with genetic engineering. We are CAUSING more problems than we are solving. Sadly, this has been our track record throughout history.

Jeez Woody and Mike,
Let's boycott Monsanto. Never liked them gize anyway! For the mallow and puncture vine, I'll just use some of the other chemicals in my arsenal that work better anyway. No more Roundup "Pro" (Pro-cost is more like it) for me. They are really going to foul up our ecology, which is already totally fouled up.
So on the brighter side of things, let's support the little guys. I always like the underdog.

Woody,
Not science fiction!!!!
Universities all over are teaching it as college courses.
You, my friend, need to do a little research on the matter.
Go to a website called howthingswork.com
Do a search on nanotechnology.
IBM has been researching it for years. MERCK pharmaceuticals has a whole lab devoted to it.
Dockers khaki pants has a line right now called Stain Resistant pants. The ability to do the resistance is due to nanotechnology.
Time travel is theoretical.
Nanotechnology is a REALITY that is now.
And yes the human race, I'm sure, will make it 30 more years.
Do a little research on the subject and you will find that it is very much a reality NOW.
I am currently in college earning my way to be a nanotechnologist. I wouldn't be doing that if it wasn't real.

First post here guys so bare with me ok!
Getting back to the original posts, I just use the basic "Round Up"(the new one that dosnt kill frogs) add a squirt of dish washing liquid, and sometimes a dash of vinegar(spellin?). It supposedly helps with the Ph level of the water but thats over here in rain water. I dont know if it works or not, just putting it out there. Still takes 10 days or so to start turning yellow.

Fellas, you both are sorta correct.
It really doesn't matter if the genes were altered at one time many years ago. When they pollinate a non-altered organism and it makes it more adapted, it is evolution. It may be evolution spead up by humans, but still evolution.a.k.a.---> Erich
