  • Brown Grass

I am new to the 'fertilizer and chemical' part of lawncare.

I got a call today from a woman with properly watered grass, but it is brown. Are there any chemicals that would help?

    Thank you for your help.

I am not trying to be a smart butt, But you need more experience before you can start to apply pesticides. From your signature in other forums (Something about a Broom from dads garage) I take it you are very young. Less than 105 years old. It is good you are here to learn.

Now you really haven't give us enough information to help you but my first guess would be fungus. I suggest you have a professional look at this lawn. There is no shame in admitting you don't know, but there is in doing something wrong. Too many people in this industry think they are experts, when in fact there are very few. I myself am a beginner after a life time in the business.

Most states (maybe all) require you to have a license to apply chemicals to lawns of clientele. If you don't know what you are doing, you can ruin somebody's lawn and incur a lot of liability. Lawns are very expensive to replace.

It is probably fungus, but could be a pest. You have to learn how to diagnose these things. Many good fungal controls require special safety equipment to handle. Some are very carcinogous.

Is it hot where you are? The heat might be a big factor.

Is the woman getting her lawn fertilized now? If she is, are they using a fast or slow release nitrogen. I ask this because, if it is fast release and the company hasn't been there for a while, then the grass will quickly turn brown. It is literally starving for the nitrogen.

          Just curious.

Brown grass? Is it a fungus, improper drainage, fertilizer burn, insect damage, extraordinary conditions? One cannot properly treat a problem without proper identification of the pest, for which the brown grass exists. Once the pest has been identified, only then can proper horticultural practices be implemented to treat the problem. NO CHEMICAL should be used if you do not know what you are trying to treat. Most problems can be eliminated with proper horticultural practices. Most problems do arise with the onset of improper horticultural practices. Identify the cause and go from there.
