  • Fertilizing new sod?

I just recieved a call from a customer that wants a newly sodded yard fertilized. The sod was installed about 2-3 weeks ago and its been very dry since then. Are there any precautions i should take with new sod like this? I figured i would go a little lighter than usual so i don't burn anything. I charged $60 for this yard (14,000 sq/ft) .

12-12-12 no higher than triple 19. stay at about 3 lbs per 1000 if the sod shows any stress.

10-10-10 at 2lb per 1,000 at this time of year. 4lb per 1,000 in fall. Make sure the customer waters the new sod.

Excellent advice. Probably perfect. I really have no business posting here, as this issue has been handled, but I just wanted to say that these guys are right on. High P and K (mostly K), and only a medium amount of N. I was going to say triple 18, as it was the first one in thuis range that came to mind, but you gyys hit the nail right on the head, too. Man, I love this stuff!

Fertilizer should have been applied before sod was installed. You fert sod from underneath to promote rooting. If you apply fert after sodding, roots have no reason to grow down into soil.

Now Seascape, I pamper mine. 13-25-12 at a 1#P/K rate, same as seeding. But tilled in a couple of inches before laying sod. No topside fert for at least a month after installation.

Jim you know as well as i do that sod will hook up on black top if you water it enough. But really i dont get picky on sod installs. I use whats i have on hand in most cases and just adjust my rate. But i will go as far as to let all forum members know that id take your advise on any turf related issue. Anybody has a turf issue jim is the man on this board to see. Ever since stone left anyhow. Just kidding jim ,,,,, its just a joke.
