Dose anyone use backpacks with a gas engine. Just wondering how good they work?

If you are strong enough to carry a gas powered sprayer on your back you should be strong enough to pump a manual model.

No one has really addressed this subject this year. Are you considering Stihl or Mayurama? Someone did tell me "The Stihl type it weights 24 empty and add 3 gallons pf water at 8lbs each makes 48 but really handles great and blows Both dry and liquid about 40 feet on a calm wind day."

At 48 lbs It is not something I would like to carry all day long. I have looked at them, but have not bought one as yet. One of my concerns is contaminating myself from the large volume of Mist out put by these units. I have a B&G power duster for GHP (inside Pest Control) and it does put out a large volume of dust to contaminate the operator.

The theory behind Air blaster is the it turns the leaves so the CONTACT pesticide coats all surfaces of the leaf and stem. Agriculture has used Air blasters for many years. Systemic pesticides are a NO- NO on food crops. I would be very careful of WHAT I APPLIED with these units. Read not only the LABEL but also the MSDS. Soap and oil are very good pesticides to use with the Air blaster and you can swim it them.

Not sure I answered your question. Hope I have given you food for Thought.

When I first read this post I was in agreement with you because I mis-understood the type of Equipment Roger was asking about. Standard backpacks work great for me and I like pumping them to different pressures for certain applications. Alpine Naturalscapes post cleared up my misunderstanding.

I've never had a Problem using the Back Pack Sprayer at all & have used one quite a bit.

I don't see that much advantage to having an extra engine do something that I can do by hand just as easily.

But I'm sure it fits some applications that the back pack hand pump sprayer can't handle.

So the Question is, can the Expense be justified for the amount of use? That is the Question?

I was a Lawn Service Business Owner for 5 years, the biggest purchasing mistake I made was Purchasing a $1,000 Plus Rear Tine Tiller.

I did not use one enough to justify purchasing it, after a Couple of Carb jobs between doing Tilling Jobs & then running it for 20 or 30 minutes every month or so to keep the carb from fouling up, the Tiller was just another headache.

I should have just rented the tiller considering how little I used it, then figured the Rent & time hauling it back & forth to the rental company in my estimates!

There's a lot of Unnecessary Equipment Purchases made in this business, you must be able to justify the expense or it's just another thing that is a Liability for You & Your Business.

My Family could have used that $1,000 Plus for the Tiller!

The Great thing about Mistakes is, if we learn from them, it was worth the Trouble, if we didn't learn from them, they are just another Headache!

Posts seem to be favoring the manual back pack, But Roger, I have to say, they are fine for lawn apps, but for spraying trees, the motor blower is going to be superior. This is because it twists the leaves while spraying them, and is MUCH easier to get an effective coating this way. True in shrubs and perennials too - pests most often are under the leaves, and spraying them is difficult and time consuming without blowing them. So if you think you are going to be spraying pests in trees and shrubs, give these units strong consideration.

Plus the liquid spray ability is only about another $200. These units have double duty as a regular blower.
