I am in northern Illinois. I would like to know what is the best timing for crabgrass control. I am using a Granular fertilizer w/ Dimension. Any info?

How about in the fall? < Ive read some things regarding that.

At turf class last thursday this was discussed. What is needed for crabgrass to germinate is three days in a row where the soil temperature remains over 60 degrees. This is expected to be the third week in April in this area, northern Dupage, Cook counties.

          Crabgrass control

Dimension is a very good product. It not only works for preemergent control of crabgrass but early post emergent control. Probably for you, apply it no later than May 10th for best results. Personally, I like to switch to post emergent rates about the 3rd or 4th week in April. If you use liquid dimension, try to apply right AFTER the lawn is mowed because some lawn mowers bag clippings, thus removing some of the effectiveness of the application (the dimension is coated to the grass until watered in). It certainly is never too early to apply dimension either--- after the frost is out of the ground, however, you may want to do a split application if you start early to provide season long control, especially if there is a hot wet spring and dry summer, so plan accordingly.

A fall application is certainly a good idea for controlling annual bluegrass if you have it and it will carry over some into the next spring. From a financial standpoint, I would not apply it in the fall because it is more expensive and you will need another application of it in the spring. If you have clients with lots of annual bluegrass or perhaps a newer but established lawn, it wouldn't hurt to use it. Our company does about $5,000,000 in annual sales, so I hope my experience helps you out.
