  • over fertilized

i have a costomer who over fertilized, BAD. her son layed 2, 5000sq foot bags of scotts step 2 ( fert + weed control ) in there front lawn. The front lawn is about 2k sq feet. after 2 days it started to burn, then she called me. i told her to water a crap load to wash as much out as possible, but she was going to lose most of the lawn. Short of watering can we do anything else to help.

That's a S***load of fert to put onto a lawn. The myth of "If a little is good, more is better" does not apply and washing out with water will NOT save the lawn!! It's an expensive lesson that should not have happened if common sense was employed; but obviously "OUT TO LUNCH" seems to be the term to use here. Geeze Louise!!

What to do you ask? How about a brain transplant?

An Application of Horticulture Gypsum will help clean the Chemical Exchange sites (cation and Anion Exchange Capacity) and leach out the excess. I am not sure what the Active Ingredient of the weed part is but you need to find that out and neutralize it before replanting the lawn. Activated Charcoal might also be applied to help with the neutralizing.

I used activated charcoal on a spill on a customers lawn last fall and it is almost fully grown back. It was about a 30 square foot patch near a dip in the yard where the applicator upset the spreader (not I). I just ground up a bag from the plant section and mixed with water and poured it on. It seems to have helped, but I have no comparison to see how long it would've taken to recover without the help.
p.s. I agree with Stephen M. and think you should suggest a brain transplant.
