question on sick looking st aug grass

ok i don't have a license for fert or weed control but this is for my yard.

for four years a great looking st aug (seville) in back yard. took two years to get it looking like that. added tons of manure peat moss and tilled it in 36 inches as nothing would grow in it before that.... now in one weeks time have gone from a super thick lawn to sick as a dog see all the roots bare spots back yard. used scotts bonus s and in the past has kept it great. i called a pest control and they confirmed that i do not have chinch bugs and no mold he said lack of iron and need heavy fertilizer. he quoted a price of $1,100.00 to do it on a one year contract, he refused to give me a guarentee so i didn't let him do it.

any ideas on what could cause something like this? the grass gets 3 plus hours a day direct sunlight in the morning from 9:30am - 1:00pm then shade and then filtered sunlight from 5:00pm till sundown. my wife is ready to shoot me. she thinks i brought a bug from one of the pastures i mow.

Unlike the hay fields you Bush Hog Seville is a fine texture semi-dwarf culivar of St Augustine. It has excellent Shade and cold Tolerant and is still very popular on the east coast of Florida in older neighborhoods. Being a Semi-Dwarf it does grow slower than Floratan and is mowed shorter. It had no resistant to insects and can be prone to Fungus.

Now this year we have had abnormal weather and Chinch bugs love dry turf. We are now in a very late and low volume Rainy season. However heavy rain can suppress chinch bugs, they drown. I always tell my customer even after treatment their turf will get worst before it gets better. COULD it be that the rains suppressed your chinch bugs?? If in fact you can see lots of dead runners and blades of grass that are yellow on one side of the center vein and green on the other side, this is chinch bug damage. If you can pull the center grass blade from the stolon without breaking it and see the white tip from the stolon, you have fungus. however this time of year is to hot for most fungus.

By posting a picture we can better help you move back into the house. I know the dog house has lots of mosquito this time of the year. BTW say hello to Aunt Bee for me.

btw i don't bushhog pastures I mow the weeds level at 4.5 inches so the horses don't trip

What I don't see is WEEDs, this tells me that it was a very health lawn not to long ago. Nor do I do not see any damage from Chinch Bugs per say. I am wondering about water and fertilizer and the History of such. I am concerned that weeds might come in before regrowth can occur. Well if you can get that crap to look good than you have 1 on me. Typically we use round up 3oz per gal on anything that remotely resembles that junk.Hell i might be tempted to toss a cup of deisel in the bottom of that back pack just to make sure it sticks real real good.

In the past we have used Boulder as an accent. But your right on about Rocks and Hard scape. Ponds are a biggie right now and the real rock water falls look great. Now my area is sand and no rocks so they must be shipped in. At $ 0.16 to 0.35 pound they can add up. Since we are also Flat landers, Retaining walls are general very low. But a nice Stone wall for raised beds is nice. Shell rock from the ocean is used as Rip Rap here for years because it is cheap. we now use a lot of it for low walls.

Interesting That you posted about Rocks Just last night I saw Pictures of My sister's new landscape in Hot Spring Village Ark. It is NOTHING but rocks. Of course I think there are a lot of non inhaling Stoned from Ark.

Now your Rock Garden post was made tongue in cheek. However in an area with a year round growing season and heavy growth, "Less is More". Too many plants overcrowd. Accent rocks can offer a tasteful touch to the landscape. Broaden your horizons and add all kinds of Hardscape, It is also a profit maker.

Not really. Crabgrass is an Annual and St Augustine is a perennial. Yes Yankees who choose to live in the Frozen North lands think is looks like crabgrass. However in our Calcareous Sandy soil it does well. It is a native of Puerto Rico and like all of our landscape it is Tropical and indicative of the Paradise which we live in.
